Nine Taken To Hospital After Bus Flips On Side

The passengers and drivers of a Clarkstown School District mini bus and sedan that collided this afternoon in New City were taken to Nyack Hospital. The bus was carrying six students from the Rockland Jewish Academy in West Nyack when the accident occurred at the intersection of Northbound Route 304 and Laurel Road.

The Clarkstown School District reported one child had neck pains. Clarkstown Police reported the six students onboard suffered minor injuries and the bus driver sustained cuts and bruises but none of the injuries appeared to be serious or life threatening. There were no details available about the driver and passenger in the Toyota Corolla.

According to a statement issued by the police, “Initial reports are that the car may have passed a red light causing the accident.”

Sgt. James Fay said the bus was heading eastbound and crossing Route 304 onto Laurel Road at 1:49 p.m. when the accident happened. The bus was upended and pushed onto the driver’s side.

A flatbed tow truck removed the car involved in the crash. Two tow trucks remained at the scene to upright the bus, which had almost hit a utility pole. Fay said there were several witnesses to the accident who would be interviewed for the ongoing investigation.

Clarkstown School Superintendent Dr. J. Thomas Morton sent an email to all district parents soon after the accident.

“Given the severity of the accident, we are thankful that our youngsters and bus driver appear to be okay,” he wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families. As always, Clarkstown’s first responders did an outstanding job in responding to this critical situation.”
