Police Probe Death That Prompted Hazardous Materials Incident

Potassium cyanide found inside Stony Point home.

Police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old woman in an incident that triggered a hazardous materials alert in Stony Point on Monday night.

Stony Point police said the woman was found in her home on Terry Lane in the town. When town officers arrived, police said they discovered quantities of potassium cyanide in the woman's home.

This discovery led police to secure the home and alert the Stony Point Fire Department and the Rockland County Hazardous Materials team to investigate and deal with the deadly chemicals at around 7:30 p.m. Police said police officers were able to get out of the residence safely and none of them were injured.

Firefighters and hazardous materials team members were at the residence until about 11 p.m., and police said none of the emergency workers were injured in the investigation.

The woman's body was removed by the Rockland County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police said the death is not being considered a homicide.

There was no one else in the residence when police found the body. No nearby residences had to be evacuated, police said.
