The /Stuart L. Gates Scholarships were awarded Friday night to four local students.
With the help of donations and support from Barry Dorfman of Liberty Mutual in New City, the Board of Directors of RCVFA approved a recommendation by Scholarship Chairman James B. Hartwick of the Nyack Fire Department to award a total of $5,000 for four RCVFA Stuart L. Gates 2012 Scholarship, according to Board Chairman Chris Nau.
There were 13 applications received and reviewed and evaluated again. Two scholars winners received $1,500 each and two others were granted $1,000 each.
Winners are:
Kristen A Sandberg, Clarkstown South High School graduate. She's going to Marist College; is active with the West Nyack Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, received her Girl Scouts Gold Award; and, is a Lifetime Member of the American Quarter Horse Assn. as an owner of two horses.
Bridget Kunz, graduate of Clarkstown North High School. She plans to enter Binghamton University. She was Team Captain for Varsity Lacrosse, a helper at Congers Fire Department Pancake Breakfasts, and has been both a blood donor and volunteer at blood drives.
Sarah Mistele of Clarkstown South High School. She's going to Penn State Schreyer Honors College. She earned her Girl Scouts Bronze Award, also was president of Center Stage Drama, and was director of the Children’s Choir at St John’s Episcopal Church.
Kevin Brelesky from North Rockland High School. He plans to attend Marymount Manhattan for Theatre or Vocal Performance. He has been a cantor at St. Mary’s Church, in a cappella choir, was an Honor Society Tutor, a Youth Police Academy member and Snack Shop volunteer at football games.
The scholarships were awarded at the Hillcrest firehouse on Route 45.
