Sheriff: Rockland County Jail Inmate A Fugitive From Florida

Man charged with using fake $100 bills at Palisades Center is wanted for parole violation.

A Florida man accused of buying items at a Palisades Center mall store in West Nyack with $700 in fake $100 bills has been re-arrested in the Rockland county jail on charges of being a fugitive from justice in Florida, according to the Rockland County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Louis Falco said that after Anthony Tapai, 26, of Orlando, FL, was ordered held in the Rockland County Correctional Center in New City on $15,000 bail by the Clarkstown Town Court the Sheriff's Department discovered that Tapai is wanted by the Charlotte County, FL, Sheriff's Department on a violation of probation charge.

Tapai was arraigned again on Tuesday on the warrant and is now being held pending extradition.

Tapai was originally arrested by Clarkstown police. In addition to using $700 in fake $100 bills to make purchases, police said Tapai was also found to have two more fake $100 bills when he was arrested. Tapai was arrested after security staff at Macy's complained Tapai apparently used fake bills to pay for numerous items at 4:55 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13.

Tapai was charged with of first-degree possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of stolen property.
