A report of a smell of smoke at 121 Main Street in Nanuet led to the discovery of five 55-gallon drums of potentially hazardous materials on Monday afternoon. The Rockland County Hazardous Material Unit determined one drum contained light mineral oil, one drum contained kerosene, and three drums contained a mixture of the two substances.
Clarkstown Police Sergeant Jo Anne Fratianni reported building and code violations are pending. A private contractor removed the barrels at the building owner’s expense.
The Nanuet Fire Department and Clarkstown Police Department arrived at the scene at about 12:40 p.m. and determined the smoke was coming from a basement furnace. The Clarkstown Fire Inspector investigated and found five 55-gallon metal drums being stored there and called the Hazardous Material Unit to identify the contents.
