UPDATE: Two Handguns Stolen in New City Home Burglary

Britta Lane home burglarized on Wednesday and two handguns, pistol permits, cash, jewelry taken.

A home on Britta Lane in New City was burglarized and ransacked on Wednesday, Clarkstown Police said.

Two handguns, a .45 cailber Colt and .22 caliber Iver Johnson, were stolen along with Rockland and Orange County pistol permits. Police report two safes on the upper level of the home were pried open and a third safe was missing from the basement.

An undetermined amount of cash, jewelry and U.S. Savings Bonds were also taken. The homeowner reported the burglary to police at about 9:45 p.m. Sgt. Jo Anne Fratianni said she did not know if the home had been included in an online map of Rockland County licensed pistol permit holders.

In a followup statement, police note the burglary is still under investigation and there are no facts to support a correlation between it and the published map.

Earlier this week, a burglar attempted to pry open a gun locker inside a White Plains home listed on the controversial gun permit map, police said.

The Clarkstown Police Department Detective Bureau is investigating and asks anyone with information to contact the Clarkstown Police Department at 845-639-5800 or the TIPS line at 877-639-6233.

a simple overview..on my street there are 5 people on the Journal news list..truthfully when I saw whothey are..and the type of very nice houses they live in...you start to think..mmmm wonder whats also inside the house that the homeowner needs to protect.....soon they will demand every bank account holder has to put at the curb an electronic device that shows bank balances!!!!!!!..one of the houses on my street the guy owns a retail business so maybe he brings home lots of cash who knows..
BUT there are most likely a slew of rifles and shotguns in this neighborhood owned by those NOT on the lists..ANOTHER SIDEBAR THAT WILL BE DEVASTATING..AS ALL THOSE WHO OWN THE AR-15;S HAVE TO REGISTER.I AM SURE THOSE ADDRESSES WILL BECOME PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE ALSO..WELCOME TO BIG BROTHER..AS WE HAVE JUST SEEN it doesnt always work for the safety of those who own guns responsibily..

I forget! Did Cuomo increase the penalty for STEALING guns too?

I am so glad I got to cancel my subscription to the paper when I moved recently. Some of those in the video were not part of the release of names. I am not for lawsuits in general, though I hope someone sues the paper and I hope many folks cancel their subscriptions.

How does this guy have a pistol permit in both Rockland and Orange County....I thought you got your permit in the county in which you lived??
Anthony Mele January 18, 2013 at 02:48 am
The permit is good in the State of New York. He may have applied in the County where he previously lived or currently worked for convenience. Not an issue. I am an FFL and NYS Gun Dealer.
Anthony Mele January 18, 2013 at 02:50 am
Perhaps.... Only criminals should have guns.. http://amiglobalsecurity.com/only-criminals-should-have-guns/

don't worry clarkstown's finest are on the case. they make 200 grand a year they will have the bad guys locked up in no time
Doubting Thomas January 18, 2013 at 02:59 am
If he wants to carry in Orange, he needs permit there too. RC permit does not transfer

The Journal News should take down the gun map before someone gets killed by one of the stolen guns or guns yet to be stolen. If that does happen, which I sincerely hope won't be the case, the Journal News can look forward to some very pricey lawsuits for their irresponsibility. Why not make a map of people who are on vacation? How about a map of everyone with a safe in their house or everyone who has registered a security system to protect their house. Why not map where all the single mothers or retirees live. As it is, some of them are now mapped if they felt the need to utilize their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves. Only, they won't be sleeping with a loaded gun at their side when the criminal breaks in to steal their weapon, armed to the teeth and ready to use their illegal guns.
this may be a rumor who knows..they want to post a list of those people who buy any expensive watch over 5,000 and all jewelery stores will have to register all those who buy anything made of gold!!!!!!!! this way "big brother will know if there is a problem at those addresses how many cops to send!!!!!!maybe next will be they will want to register all Cappachino coffee brewers too so the cops will rush to those houses also for the coffee!!!!!!next wil lbe mandatory cameras in every room all linked into the police stations!!!!!

The Gun thief is a particularly dangerous criminal. The profile is they are professionals and like have done time before. They are willing to do you harm if confronted or encountered. They likely show up in a commercial type vehicle like a plumber, electrician, many times with removable magnetic emblems. In this case, they showed up with the right tools to remove a safe, showing they anticipated it. They only took the valuable they came for. They were prepared. The phone records will indicate that home received several phone calls prior to the robbery. If there were any witnesses, they will say they did not see anything suspicious. Contractors are coming and going in the wake of SANDY repairs. No reflection on the police dept. but the rate of recovery is practically nil. They will find no finger prints. There was NOT A VIDEO SECURITY CAMERA no where to be found at this home or in the vicinity. Now, to say the JN map had nothing to do with a targeted, well prepared robbery defies intelligence. www.amiglobalsecurity.com
very good information..great insite....in this era of too much information..the perps are having a field day.......if I am correct and please correct me..a homeowner can take any actions available to confront a burglar as long as he cant retreat anymore...and then and only then he can use whatever means to stop the perp..please advise if you know the correct answer
what I keep in my bedroom is a can of wasp killer LOL it is only for those wasps!!!but it does shoot like 30 feet and doesnt hold 10 rounds LOL

The response to the incident replied to by Mr Mele is very informative and worthwhile.I would recommend that residents are extra vigilant in view of the publishing of, in my opinion, personal information and that needs to be corrected ASAP. Police Officer GMP CiD,UK.

Has anyone seen this story reported on Lohud? Just weird I checked for it and I see nothing about it, not even a followup to it...Hmmmm interesting Lohud........
MCD January 18, 2013 at 11:55 am
The JN will make this a Catch-22. stating if the homeowner didnt have guns in the first place, the guns wouldnt have been stolen so they will make this the homeowners problem and fault. Easy out for JN. Subscribe to the Rockland Times like I did. Published Once a week and more news in that paper in one day than all the JN all week long.
Alex Umrichin January 18, 2013 at 12:14 pm
The better idea would be for their neighbors who do own firearms to put up a sign : We are protected by Smith & Wesson. Go next door.
Alex Umrichin January 18, 2013 at 12:20 pm
To SK. It has everything to do with being a liberal. Liberals. The Left would do anything to eliminate the Bill of Right because it impedes their ability to exercise totalitarian control of our every day lives. The irony is that in the case of publications like the JN, they would be the first casualties if the left were to get their way.
Anthony Mele January 18, 2013 at 01:17 pm
This case can be broken by eye witnesses or a. Security video camera nearby or in place. An amateur will make mistakes. Glad no one was hurt.
Anthony Mele January 18, 2013 at 01:24 pm
Stand your ground and castle rules apply to self defense in your home.
well the robbery of the guns in "the safest town in ny "is going viral.....it was on aol...and many other sites!!!!wow the more we pay for uniforms doesnt always equate to whattaxpayers get in return....How come with the highest paid cops in th country we even have one crime?????????in the real world if a Ceo doesnt produce salaries are looked at with a microscope......a question..not pertaining to this...if a employee of a municipality of a town lies on a police report is that grounds for dismissal even if it was a personal issue??just asking..is it a crime? any statue of limitations about lying on a police report?
maybe they should ask every employee"have you ever filed a police report that wasnt true"mmmmmmmm

"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it." - Martin Luther King
Gun Appreciation Day protests in New City, White Plains, Albany, and nationwide on Saturday will serve in the honor of Martin Luther King.
Mark K January 18, 2013 at 04:20 pm
In NY there is no " stand your ground" law. You have a duty to retreat if you are safely able to do so EXCEPT in your home where there is no duty. That second part is Castle doctrine.
HardWorkingGuy January 18, 2013 at 04:20 pm
At this point it doesn't matter much if the map stays or goes, the data has been released to anyone with internet access, and can be archived offline on their personal device with ease! In addition to having a virtual address book in which to steal weapons, are the addresses that are incorrect(there are several I know about) where the occupants do not have a permit and the data was outdated.... those poor people are in danger and don't even have a valid reason to be!
DLS January 18, 2013 at 05:23 pm
Cancel subscription to JN should be a must for anyone that agrees their publishing that list was irresponsible.
SK, New City January 18, 2013 at 05:25 pm
Several of my neighbors/friends have moved years ago and their names are still listed at these addresses...putting these new owners at risk. What a STUPID IRRESPONSIBLE thing for the Journal to do!
Warren G Harding January 18, 2013 at 06:18 pm
Glad to see all the amutuer detectives at work, Anthony Milel you are a professional leading the charge, speculation is just that, speculation. As long as I'm at it though, 3 safes in the house, maybe someone they knew decided to go looking to see what was so important that was in the safes. "An undetermined amount of cash & savings bonds" seems the owner would know what he had.
Deejay January 18, 2013 at 07:41 pm
Hmmm. If I get pulled over and have a copy of the Journal News in my car, can I be charged with posession of a burglary tool?
JMom January 18, 2013 at 10:16 pm
That damn list is ridiculous anyway. It only lists those who have permits, not necessarily guns. My sister got a permit years ago and is on that map but she does not currently own a gun. So she could be a target for no reason at all. And how nice for her that her neighbors now think she has a gun when she doesn't. The map also listed my cousin in Congers, but she's been living in Florida for over 10 years now. They put this map out and its not even accurate. That's even worse than putting it out at all.
John Touri January 19, 2013 at 01:45 pm
JN had no right to publish such a list for the 2nd time... Last time it was names and addresses, now there is map to help...anyone who has a permit I'm sure they remember that it took over 12 plus months to get it... The correct legal way... The acts of the JN NEWS NEED TO BE DELT WITH... Westchester county needs to go after them, and see to it that it doesn't happen again. Regardless of our safes, lock boxes, etc, now we have a map to our home!!!

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant
Tom Nimick June 11, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 08:08 am
An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest. Mr. Borelli, shame on you for accepting a private communication and not standing by your guidance to Mr. Lettre that he was to come back to an open meeting of the Town Board.

Grace Anthony Zemsky June 10, 2013 at 09:00 am
The traffic from the nearby Palisades Parkway is more of a noise nuisance than the cicada chorus.Read More (We have triple-paned windows because of it.) There is something almost musical about the hum of the cicadas. Of course, it may bother me more if I lived in the "affected area" and heard it constantly. Upon entering this nearby neighborhood, the sound crescendos. And yet, it can't be heard a couple of streets away. The drone of locusts is more bothersome than these 17 year cicadas.
