Upstate Woman Charged in Theft from Hurricane Sandy Good Samaritan

Police: Checks stolen from elderly woman who took in woman affected by power outage during hurricane.

An upstate New York woman has been arrested in connection with the theft of checks from an elderly Stony Point woman who gave her shelter after Hurricane Sandy, according to Stony Point Police.

Sharri Ann Despres, 52, of 1122 Sackett Lake Rd., Forestburgh, NY, was charged Thursday after an investigation of blank checks that were stolen - and then cashed in Sullivan County. Police said the victim provided shelter to Despres, who lost power due to Hurricane Sandy.

Despres is accused of petty larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property in Stony Point, and police said she faces additional charges in Liberty, NY, where the stolen checks were cashed.

Despres was released pending a March 7 hearing in Stony Point Town Court.
