It's a simple message, but one that volunteer firefighters say needs to repeated often: Smoke detectors save lives.
In the wake of a rash of recent incidents in Rockland County - including New City - where serious fires took place at homes without smoke detectors, New City City Fire Chief Kenny Flynn urges homeowners to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are in working order.
Flynn offers three basic tips for fire safety in the home:
- Check the batteries in your smoke detectors at least twice a year.
- If you don't have smoke detectors, get them. They are inexpensive and easy to install.
- If you have a fire in your home, call 911 right away and get everyone out of the home immediately.
