West Rock Sports Complex Roof Collapses, Burns

Part of the West Rock Indoor Sports & Entertainment Complex collapsed last night under the weight of heavy, wet snow from Winter Storm Pax.

The collapse occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Feb. 13, Clarkstown police said.

The building in Nanuet was unoccupied and closed for business at the time.

The collapse possibly ruptured a gas line causing a small fire in the rear portion of the building, police said. Fire Departments from Nanuet and West Nyack responded to the scene as well as Harold Straut, Clarkstown Fire Inspector and Erik Asheim, Clarkstown Building Inspector.  Initial reports from Fire Inspector Straut indicate the collapse may have been caused from the weight of the snow and rain.

Two people were inside: members of a maintenance/cleaning crew. They escaped without harm, according to nyackfreepress.com.

The sports complex managers posted on its Facebook page at 11 p.m. Feb. 13: "Due to a roof collapse in the turf area of the facility this evening, we will be closed until further notice. Check back as we will be posting updated information as we have it."

The Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services advises checking all low slope or “flat” roof construction (i.e., roofs with less than ½ inch per foot slope) to determine if significant ice/snow accumulations exist.

You can find the complete roof snow load advisory through the Pearl River schools website.
