At Thursday afternoon’s Clarkstown Town Board meeting, the board voted in favor of approving the 2013 salary schedule, which includes a two percent raise for elected officials.
A couple of speakers during the public comment portions of the meeting asked how the board could vote for raises given the state of the economy.
After the meeting, Town Supervisor Alex Gromack said the salary schedules are set almost completely by union contracts agreed to in previous years.
“We’re not negotiating these,” he said. “The numbers are the numbers. It’s pretty much all set. The funding for them is budgeted for.”
When questioned during the meeting, Councilman Frank Borelli said in past years, he’s returned the raise to the county. He said he was told he could calculate whatever the percentage of the raise is and return it.
