Clarkstown Dedicates Freedom Causeway

Veterans joined with Clarkstown officials in dedicating the American Flag lined causeway between New City and Congers as the Freedom Causeway.

Town Supervisor Alex Gromack led the Wednesday morning ceremony attended by members of the American Legion, Korean War Veterans, Jewish War Veterans, VFW, Nam Knight, Viet Nam Veterans and Marine Corps League.

“It is fitting to pay tribute to the members of our Armed Services and to dedicate this Clarkstown Freedom Causeway in their honor, said Gromack. “Without our veterans these flags would not be waving. Without these flags we would not have democracy or our freedom. So whenever we see a flag we should remember who it was and is that keeps that flag waving. Whenever we see a veteran we should remember what our flag stands for - for freedom. The two cannot be separated in our memories or our thoughts.”

Gromack presented Rockland County’s 2014 Veteran of the Year Kenneth Walters with a citation for his service.

“Sometimes it’s easy to forget what others have sacrificed for our country,” said Gromack. “Sometimes it’s easy to forget what others have done, what they continue to do every day to ensure that we as Americans continue to enjoy and cherish the freedoms and the opportunities that we have as a free people.”

Walter thanked his fellow veterans for attending.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it,” said the World War II veteran and New City resident. “There are many more veterans standing out here that deserve more than what I am receiving.”

Walters, who is 85 years old, served in the Pacific and occupation of Japan. He was a technician fifth grade and received World War II Victory and Occupation of Japan medals.

The Freedom Causeway sign is part of a new Adopt-A-Spot, which stands on property owned by United Water and a waterfall and rock garden donated by Mr. Landscape.

United Water NY Vice President and General Manager Michael Pointing said the company was proud to be a community partner on the project that borders the Lake DeForest Reservoir.

“And that’s why we at United Water are very proud that our property can draw attention to the selfless veterans who have served this great nation,” said Pointing. The beautiful reservoir, the new landscaping, the waterfalls and the flags capture our attention. More importantly they provide us with the reminder to reflect and honor our veterans.”

The Clarkstown Police Honor Guard presented the colors and West Nyack Senior Club member Bob Rovino sang The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America.”
