The Clarkstown Town Board directed the town’s building inspector and zoning administrator to follow up complaints of unkempt vacant, foreclosed and abandoned properties in the town and arrange to have lawn or landscaping work done if needed by town employees or subcontractors. On Tuesday, the town board released a list of almost 40 properties in Bardonia, Congers, Nanuet, New City, Valley Cottage and West Nyack that are in violation.
Zoning Administrator Joel Epstein said property owners are notified they are in violation before the town does any work. He said properties that fall into disrepair are often in limbo because a bank has not foreclosed on them yet. A tax lien is put onto the properties for the cost of the cleanup, which can include grass, weed, tree and shrub trimming and debris removal. If a property that is on the list is cleaned up when crews arrive, they go onto the next address.
