David Fried Endorsed By Rockland County Corrections Officers

Commitment to law enforcement cited as reason for his first union endorsement.

The Correction Officers Benevolent Association of Rockland County (COBARC) endorsed former Spring Valley Justice David Fried for county executive on Monday.

The union president explained the endorsement was based on Fried’s standing as a “longtime, trusted, and proven friend of the law enforcement community,” who is expected to bring sound financial leadership to Rockland.

“First as a chair of the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee, then as an administrator in the Sheriff’s Office, and as Spring Valley Justice, David Fried has shown his commitment to ensuring a safe community for every resident, family, and business in Rockland,” COBARC President John Kezek, Jr. of Stony Point said. “David’s impressive record of hard work and results is exactly what we need in the County Executive’s office.”

Fried’s campaign manager Stephen Papas said this is the Democratic candidate’s first union endorsement but he has already received campaign donations from other unions including COBARC, the Rockland County Sheriff’s Deputies Association, Rockland County Policemen’s Benevolent Organization and Westchester County Corrections Officers’ Benevolent Association.

COBARC Executive Board Member Matthew Peters of Stony Point voiced his support of Fried.

“His years of experience, along with his understanding of how to cut through partisanship, find consensus, and get things done, no other candidate matches what Judge Fried brings to the table,” said Peters.  “He knows our officers on a first name basis, has toured our facility, and has jumped right in to knowing the exact issues in corrections that have the greatest impact on the county budget.”

The union’s executive board indicated it plan to take an active role in the election and urge current and former members and their families to get involved and vote for Fried.  According to Papas, COBARC is the first group of county employees to endorse a candidate in the race.  The county is mandated by the state to provide corrections services.

Fried expressed appreciation for the support.

“The men and women of corrections are a credit to law enforcement with one of the toughest beats possible,” said Fried. “As county executive I will work closely with our corrections personnel to ensure they have a high quality of life on the job, that they are safe and well-trained, and that their mission is accomplished in a fiscally prudent manner.”

The other Democratic candidates in the race are County Legislator Ilan Schoenberger and Suffern Mayor Dagan Lacorte. County Legislator Ed Day is the only Republican candidate.

I think we need to look carefully at what is said during this time of electioneering for County Executive. There are a few really capable people running. But when I read a headline thast states an endorsement is based on such and such it tells me that the writer is implying, by emphasizng a comment, that it is something particular to that candidate and not the others. David Fried is one of the capable candidates for County Executive but do not imply that Ed Day has not shown support for law enforcement during his post law enforcement career. These two men will face off and the voters will be pleasantly surprised at the dedication and skills they possess to leading this County. Do not diminish them with "influential" reporting.

Union endorsement=no vote from me
Lanimilbus February 5, 2013 at 12:34 pm
@Mike, So I take it, given that all four announced candidates have previously received the endorsement and campaign contributions from organize labor, you won't be voting in this election? If it's so important to you to have a candidate that hates unions, perhaps you or someone else should run against Mr. Day in the hopes the Republican candidate will be as hostile to labor as you. This is New York - we're not a Right to Work for Less state.

Special interest endorsements are a huge red fag for me and essentially mean nothing in terms of saying my vote. If you need a special interest group to tell YOU how to vote then tat is sad
Smitty Chesterfield February 5, 2013 at 01:58 pm
i'd be most weary of the candidate who gets the endorsement from the special interest group in new square

Not sure how someone qualifies for a position due to their "trust and friendship". I have not researched Mr. Fried's experience or any other candidates, but I will be basing my vote on who I think best qualifies for managing our County as it attempts to get its fiscal house in order.

Here's something interesting about Mr. Fried, as someone pointed out on an earlier post:
"Can't wait to see how he explains holding down that "full time" patronage position in the Sheriff's Department while simultaneously holding court in the daytime as a judge. Theft of government services is a crime, and unless someone can square how he worked a 9-5 in one job while working day shifts simultaneously, it seems like it would be a fair accusation. This is the man to clean up the county? Sad." Here's a related article:. http://insiderockland.lohudblogs.com/2008/01/30/fried-starts-job-with-sheriff/

Putting aside party loyalties, the one who has consistently advocated for the residents of Rockland has been Ed Day. As Mr. Nathan above mentions, it's not only Judge Fried who has been a friend of law enforcement. Ed Day has lived law enforcement and that's not something that's easily forgotten about.

Thank you for that information Don. So now it seems that Fried is as bad as Sparaco as far as taking taxpayer dollars, LaCorte spies on his opponents, and Schoenberger is looking for a promotion after filing false county budgets for a decade. Ed Day is the only candidate beyond reproach. If the citizens of our county fail to elect him, they will have only themselves to blame.

Fried looks to be a career politician who latches on to al these public sector jobs. Schoenberger presides as Legislator over New Square, the only segregated (read non-intergrated) lily white community in Rockland that may be guilty of serious violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The kack of Diversity in that Community is appalling. LaCorte admits to attempting to spy by secretly recording his fellow Democratic "friend" and opponent to secure a political edge.
Is this the best we have? No it isn't!. Look at Ed Days record as a decades long volunteer and Legislator and then look at his Plan. Then you can make up your own mind about who will be the best person to lead Rockland as County Executive.

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant
Tom Nimick June 11, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 08:08 am
An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest. Mr. Borelli, shame on you for accepting a private communication and not standing by your guidance to Mr. Lettre that he was to come back to an open meeting of the Town Board.

The traffic from the nearby Palisades Parkway is more of a noise nuisance than the cicada chorus.Read More (We have triple-paned windows because of it.) There is something almost musical about the hum of the cicadas. Of course, it may bother me more if I lived in the "affected area" and heard it constantly. Upon entering this nearby neighborhood, the sound crescendos. And yet, it can't be heard a couple of streets away. The drone of locusts is more bothersome than these 17 year cicadas.
