Detour Setup in Progress for New Hempstead Road

Anticipated late afternoon closure of New Hempstead Road on target

It is just hours away now. The closure of New Hempstead Road between North Main Street and the Demarest Kill Culvert is drawing closer.

Rockland County Highway Department Capital Projects Manager Joe Pyzowski said the contractor is painting pavement markings and lane lines and placing signs for traffic flow and parking.

Crews are also installing concrete barriers to provide separation for traffic, parking and pedestrians in the detour area.

Drivers will be directed through the parking lot behind the Chase Bank building. A temporary traffic signal will be operational on North Main Street at the entrance to the parking lot and detour route.

The section of between North Main Street and the Demarest Kill Culvert is expected to be closed until early October while the Demarest Kill Culvert is dismantled and a replacement bridge constructed.

The reconstruction of New Hempstead Road from North Main Street to the Palisades Interstate Parkway will take 28 months.
