Funding For Hurricane Repairs And Flood Migitation Likely

Several items on the Rockland County Legislature’s agenda deal with damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and other flooding problems. When the legislature meets at 7 p.m. its members will also vote on the confirmation of Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert as the Rockland’s new health commissioner through December 31, 2013. County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef named the Stony Point resident to the post in May to fill the vacancy left by the January retirement of Dr. Joan Facelle.

The resolutions dealing with water issues include voting on:

  • A $1 million bond to repair infrastructure at Haverstraw Bay Park damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
  • A $794,000 contract for inspection of the Pascack Brook Bypass Culvert in Spring Valley with KS Engineers P.C. of New York City from July 1, 2013 through July 1, 2015.
  • Approving an $8.9 million contract for work on the Pascack Brook Bypass Culvert with Metra Industries of Little Falls, NJ.
  • Amending the Capital Budget for a $100,000 project on Muddy Creek along Route 304 in Orangetown.
  • A $100,000 bond to cover the cost of work needed for a flood mitigation study of Muddy Creek.
  • Amending the Capital Budget by $50,000 for stream and embankment work on the Sparkill Creek in Tappan in conjunction with the nearby Oak Tree Road Bridge replacement project.

Additionally, legislators will vote on accepting $1,103 from the Gran Fondo Bike Race to cover overtime costs of the sheriff’s office in conjunction with the May event and use of $170,000 in federal forfeiture funds to add to $150,000 already earmarked for the purchase and installation of a new tail boom for the county’s helicopter.
