Police search led to discovery of loaded 9mm handgun in the closet of a Haverstraw apartment.

A Haverstraw man has been sentenced to five years in prison on a weapons charge in connection with a 9mm handgun found in his apartment in 2008.

Henry Torres, 32, of 35 Main St., Haverstraw, was sentenced Tuesday in Rockland County Court in New City by Judge William K. Nelson, who also ordered Torres to serve five years on post-release supervision after he gets out of prison.

Torres pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe said that on Sept. 12, 2008, at about 11:15 a.m., a search conducted at 35 Main St., Apartment 3/FR, Haverstraw, led to the discovery of a gun inside a locked closet in Torre’s apartment.

The gun was a Bryco Arms/Jennings Nine 9mm caliber semiautomatic pistol, loaded with 10 rounds of live ammunition.
