The Pearl River ShopRite brought in a few extra workers to bag groceries Wednesday.
Orangetown Town Supervisor Andy Stewart, Rockland County Legislator Ed Day, People To People Executive Director Diane Serratore and Chris Smith of the Pearl River Rotary all took part in the ShopRite Partners in Caring "Help Bag Hunger" program.
Since 1999, ShopRite has helped to fight hunger by raising money for charitable agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to Cheryl Scorzetti, front end manager of Pearl River ShopRite.
While the four grocery baggers were at the market for only one day, Scorzetti said ShopRite collects donations for People To People for about five weeks every year. Serratore said that ShopRite donates about $2,000 to People to People every year, and allows the organization to hold food drives at the super market. She estimated that People to People has collected five tons of food at ShopRite food drives.
