Eileen Kronbichler took advantage of Gov. Cuomo's order allowing displaced residents to vote anywhere in New York State. Kronbichler of Point Lookout on Long Island left her home with daughter and five-year-old grandson on Sunday, Oct. 28. They have been staying with her brother and sister-in-law in Bardonia since then.
Kronbichler appreciated that she did not lose her opportunity to vote.
"It's very good being able to vote," she said.
She was also stoic about what happened to her home.
"I know we have no power, no heat. We have no gas to cook with," Kronbichler said.
However, she has no plans to stay away.
"I'll go back as soon as we get power," she said. "My situation is not bad compared to everybody else out there."
Others going into the school to vote expressed similar feelings about its importance.
Rocco Novellino of Bardonia said he thought the presidential race was going to be very close and he was hoping his candidate would win.
Bardonia resident Adrienne Marchese-Hade brought her five- and 11-year-old sons along. She said they discussed the election and she wanted her older son to understand that everyone' vote is critical.
A steady flow of people walked in and out of the polling site, many stopping to ask about making donations to the collection of clothing, food and money for Hurricane Sandy victims, which was organized by the school, PTA and Girl Scout Troop 40079.
