Prescription Discount Cards Save Rockland Residents More Than $500,000

County executive said savings realized in less than a year.

County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef announced that in just under one year, Rockland County residents have collectively saved more than $500,000 while using the ProAct Prescription Discount Card Program. The  program was exclusively endorsed by Rockland County Legislature in June 2011. Since the program's implementation, residents have filled more than 13,000 prescriptions saving an average of 43%, or $40.85 on each prescription they filled.

According to Vanderhoef, the county and ProAct worked together in an effort to help uninsured and underinsured residents obtain financial relief at the pharmacy when filling their prescriptions. When residents utilize the discount card, they can expect to see savings ranging from 10 to 20 percent on brand name prescriptions and 20-70 percent on generic prescriptions.

The discount card program also offers residents of Rockland County the opportunity to save on vision, hearing, and LASIK services as well as access to a low cost dental coverage plan.

“For residents who lack full prescription coverage, or for those who have no coverage at all, a trip to the pharmacy can be very costly,” said Vanderhoef. “By taking advantage of this cost free program Rockland County residents can see sizeable savings on each of the prescriptions that they fill.”

Rockland County is among the 51 counties across New York State that exclusively endorses the Prescription Discount Card Program. Combined, these counties have saved residents across the state more than $84 million, while filling more than 2.7 million prescriptions. The discount card program is currently saving residents an average of 52%, or just over $30 per prescription.
