Proposal To Name Spring Valley Toll Plaza

Legislator Ilan Schoenberger wants to name the toll plaza in memory of former newspaper publisher Armand Miele

Rockland County Legislator Ilan Schoenberger is sponsoring a resolution to ask the State of New York and the State Thruway Authority to name the Spring Valley Toll Plaza in honor of the late Armand Miele. Miele, former publisher of the Rockland County Times, a civic activist and real estate developer, passed away on March 4. The Montebello resident was 84 years old.

Schoenberger said he was approached by the newspaper's current editor and associate publisher about the tribute to Miele and he thought it was a "fitting honor" in memory of Miele's civic contributions.

“Mr. Miele is perhaps best known for his successful efforts to eliminate passenger tolls at the Spring Valley Toll Plaza,” said Schoenberger. “This relieved an unfair financial burden on Rockland residents who depended on that section of the thruway for local travel."

Schoenberger noted that Miele fought against MTA taxes and the Authority’s jurisdiction over Rockland County, he helped form the Village of Montebello, and pushed for completion of the long-delayed county courthouse.

The resolution will appear on an upcoming Planning and Public Works Committee agenda.  All Legislature committee agendas can be viewed online at www.rocklandgov.com , click on County Legislature.  Meetings are open to the public.
