Smoother Road Trip In Rockland After Record Resurfacing Project

The Rockland County Highway Department set a new record for the most miles ever resurfaced in one year. The department resurfaced almost 38 miles of roadway exceeding the 32 miles resurfaced in 2001.

“In 2012 Hurricane Sandy wreaked massive damage to county roads, causing a major delay to our paving program,” said County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef.

The countywide project was announced in May and was scheduled to include 40 roads covering an area of approximately 20 miles of pavement or more than 428,064 square yards at an estimated cost of $4.8 million. Different types of work was performed on the various roads some of which were: Middletown Road from Route 59 to Smith Road, Little Tor Road from West Clarkstown Road to Milich Lane, Eckerson Road from Route 45 to West Clarkstown Road, New City from Congers Road from Route 304 to Brewery Lane, Old Nyack Turnpike from Pascack Road to the end, Sickletown Road from Townline Road to West Nyack Road, Gilbert Ave from Veterans Memorial Highway to Sickletown Road, Greenbush Road from Clausland Mountain to Route 303 and Greenbush Rd from Bradley Parkway to Route 303.

“The result of the resurfacing leaves Rockland County’s road system rated as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ as we approach 2014,” said Highway Superintendent Charles “Skip” Vezzetti.

Vezzetti noted the highway department has performed major repairs on the Orangeburg Road Bridge, commenced construction on the Waldron Terrace Bridge and Oak Tree Road Bridge, and has completed engineering and land acquisition for the start of the Montebello Road Bridge.
