Dine and help Rebuild Hi-Tor

Dining events coming up in December will be a big part of raising money to Rebuild Hi-Tor. Join our restaurants and help Rebuild Hi-Tor and have a good meal while doing it

With this being Thanksgiving so many of us have many many thanks to give.   There are many people who unfortunately cannot enjoy the day as many of us can. Many unbelievable charities like People To People always try and make days like this better for those less fortunate.

At Hi-Tor our focus is on our furry friends.  They don't know about Thanksgiving but we want to be able to celebrate our happiness with them.  Animals provide a great source of companionship for many.   They even can be medicinal as demonstrated by programs on how animals can bring new life into seniors who sometimes feel their lives withering away into loneliness.  They provide assistance for the disable and they even prove themselves in combat.

Rockland County has only one animal shelter.  Since 2003 Hi-Tor has been the sole facility to take care of all the homeless animals that county residents bring to its door.  This is their obligation and they will not turn any animal away.

The shelter is suffering from age.  Many assess the problem to poor prior management.  Many to lack of funding.  Many to misappropriation of past funding.

Rebuild Hi-Tor is set up to turn this around.  We are going to raise the funds to build a new shelter.  One that is safer for both the animals as well as those that work there and volunteer there.

The County of Rockland has no funds.  The towns have no funds.  With a little help from the residents of Rockland County this new shelter will become a reality. The team leading the shelter right now is phenomenal.   Adoption levels are at an all time high.  But then so are the numbers of homeless pets being brought to Hi-Tor.

Donations are the prime source of building the new shelter.  Donations can be made by visiting the rebuildhitor.org website, by purchasing a brick for the new shelter by donating money in one of the hundreds of donation canisters around the county and by adopting homeless pets.

The first week in December starts off a series of events that we hope will be taken advantage of by Rockland residents as a means to donate money without spending anything additional other than going out and enjoying a good meal.  Many restaurants are stepping up to help Rebuild.

On Saturday December 1 The Turn on 2 Campbell Road in Suffern will donate 10% of all revenue that day to Rebuild.  On December 5 Cinco de Mayo will host Cinco de Diciembre at its Valley Cottage restaurant on Route 303.  Again 10% of its revenue that day will go to Rebuild.  For the entire week, December 2-8, The Dog House in Nanuet will also offer all customers a chance to donate by their mentioning and bringing in a coupon for Rebuild.  They will donate 10% of all coupon revenue they get that week to the effort.  The coupon is located on the flier pictured in this article.

We want to see you at these restaurants and in January look for dining events at Grande Centrale, Jimmy's On Main, Harbourside, Rocco's and more!

Thanks to all who are coming out to support the well being of our homeless pets and don't forget to visit Hi-Tor.  The shelter will not be closed during this fund raising or during the construction of the new facility.   They still have oodles of animals to find forever homes for and you or someone you know can share your love with a shelter pet.

You guys, when is the shelter going to publish their promotions anywhere but Facebook? You are supporting an organization that is lazy when it comes to getting the word out about all these amazing animals they have.

Lenny, running your stuff through a spell check program is still a foreign concept?

"The shelter is suffering from age. Many assess the problem to poor prior management. Many to lack of funding. Many to misappropriation of past funding."
C'mon Lenny, when I post stuff like this about the current management, you accuse me of spreading misinformation but here you are doing the same thing without anything to back up the statement. Yeah, you say "other people" but it still puts a spin on the information. I was at MANY a Legistation meeting where the CURRENT management was requested to supply their financials. They never did. Alex Gromack also asked the current Board President for that information before the Town would hand over any more funds. Since they claim not to have gotten money from Clarkstown, I think it's safe to say he never recieved them either. So my question stands, the NEW management started off with a $500K building fund. Where did that money go? Why won't they provide proof ON PAPER to either the Leislators or the Town of Clarkstown? Why was a struggling not for profit shelter paying a PR firm 1,000/month ($12K a year) to run a website that they were ingnoring while collecting that cash? Sure, they tell the public that it all went to spaying and neutering but they forget they forget the beauty of the FOIA. I have no problem with the Rebuild group but based on past performance I believe you good hearted people are being duped to collect funds. Changes need to be made before you guys hand over one red cent!

Who negotiated 10 percent? This means for every 100 dollars of food sales, the return to the charity is 10 dollars. If they served a buffet for $25.00 a person at a 10 dollar charity profit, then there would be some decent money collected. I can see the establishments getting a lot of publicity and promotion and the return of 10 percent is far too little to amount to anything.

Wow, 10 percent. At this rate of speed you should have the funds for the new shelter in 2020.

Another way people can help Hi-Tor is to vote on the Animal Rescue site. Hi-Tor is currently in 4th place but a hair out of 2nd. You can vote daily through Dec 16, We can win a grant of at least $1000. Pass the link onto your friends!

Wow, Joan, I think all of us at Rebuild would love to see you help us increase the percentages for these events. You Volunteering anytime soon--I doubt it.
Cal Mendelsohn November 28, 2012 at 02:03 pm
Joan, I have been there and I think that helping the animals there should always be the first priority of anyone seeking to advance the cause of helping shelter animals. Politics should be a distant second. I question your commitment to the first goal based on your comments here.

When you see any spam comments, please email me with a link to the post. I've been monitoring the site, but extra set of eyes is always appreciated. Thanks!

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant
Tom Nimick June 11, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 08:08 am
An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest. Mr. Borelli, shame on you for accepting a private communication and not standing by your guidance to Mr. Lettre that he was to come back to an open meeting of the Town Board.

Thanks for sharing, Grace! Your thoughts on their noise?
Grace Anthony Zemsky June 10, 2013 at 09:00 am
The traffic from the nearby Palisades Parkway is more of a noise nuisance than the cicada chorus.Read More (We have triple-paned windows because of it.) There is something almost musical about the hum of the cicadas. Of course, it may bother me more if I lived in the "affected area" and heard it constantly. Upon entering this nearby neighborhood, the sound crescendos. And yet, it can't be heard a couple of streets away. The drone of locusts is more bothersome than these 17 year cicadas.
