Rebuild is on a roll!!!

As 2012 winds down Rebuild Hi-Tor is gearing up. We and everyone in the county will assure that the workers there and the residents there have a facility to be proud of. www.rebuildhitor.org

Rebuild Hi-Tor is taking a strong hold in Rockland County and the amount of support is overwhelming!

Over the post Thanksgiving weekend Rebuild held tabling events in Pearl River at Shoprite, in West Nyack at the Palisades Center Mall and in Nanuet at Petsmart. The three locations netted over $4100.00 and over 100 bags of food for the Hi-Tor residents.

Remember, Hi-Tor is the ONLY animal shelter in Rockland County.  If any resident brings an animal to Hi-Tor they are obligated to accept that animal and try to find a home for it.  The amount of homeless animals is on the increase.  Hi-Tor has 35 dog kennels and on any given day you can find 50-60 dogs at the shelter.   The cattery is also overloaded.  Our new facility to be is designed for 100 kennels.

The holidays always see a lot of adoptions and the days after the holidays always see people bringing pets back to the shelter.  Please, before you gift an animal to someone be it your own family or someone else make sure it is a match.   The stress animals go through when they are happy in a home to confused when they are left in a cage is often very traumatic for them.

Dining events are starting to fill up in January and we will keep you posted on the ones happening as they are coming up but look for well known establishments like Harbourside in West Nyack on Jan 15, Rocco's in New City on Jan. 16, Grande Centrale in Congers on Jan 23 and many more that are solidifying their dates as this is being written.

December events start with Dec 1 at The Turn in Suffern and The Dog House in Nanuet from Dec 2-8, Cinco de Mayo in Valley Cottage on Dec 5 and D's Bagel's & Brunch in Congers on Dec 13.

All these business's will be donating portions of the day's receipts to Rebuild Hi-Tor.

Of course we want everyone to focus on the animals that are up for adoption so a couple are included here for you to check out.   10 year old Seven is so confused at no longer being in a nice warm home and in a cage with all that racket going on. She's a very friendly mushy cat that would love someone to death and wants nothing more than to be loved.   Jinxie is a face you cannot look away from .  This beautiful Lab mix is starving for affection and ready to deliver as much as they get,

Hi-Tor strives to do the best that is possible for its residents.  We want Hi-Tor to be able to do it without worrying day to day if the heat will fail, whether the air conditioning will fail or whether the roof will leak.  Rebuild will have a new facility in place and it will be done by the hands of the citizens of Rockland County.  The people are coming together.  We are so pleased at the response that this project is receiving from all corners of the county.

We will be showing up at more and more locations each weekend.  We will be partnering with more and more business' who want to help.  This is a true grass roots effort and everyone in Rockland County should be proud.   You will make this work!

I agree with most of your points, but surely you are not implying that teachers are expected toRead More produce funding to correct school roofs, right? I think you got a bit off topic here, but I agree that our educational infrastructure is in disrepair and is in desperate need of rehabilitation. Maybe if our teacher's unions allowed a little more leeway we could allocate funding a little more appropriately and fund the important things instead of overpaying paying dinosaur teachers who lost interest a long time ago and fight any and all forms of teacher benchmarking.

It's entirely true that every professional has out-of-pocket expenses. But as someone who worked asRead More a corporate trainer, I can guarantee you I NEVER had to pay out of pocket expenses for supplies to teach classes. Every piece of paper, supply, and even snacks for the participants were fully covered expenses. If I had to spend out of pocket money to procure supplies, I could submit for a reimbursement, and receive it, no questions asked. I am now in school to become a high school teacher and I can see the stark difference in how the education of folks in a corporate environment is incredibly different, and privileged, than the public school environment. I've sat through numerous classes in the Clarkstown and Ramapo districts, doing observations required for my education certification, and while Clarkstown certainly benefits from certain advantages, the shabbiness of being a public school is still there. Furniture, such as teacher desks, that looks like it was purchased in a garage sale 30 years ago... faculty bathrooms that are dark and dingy, nearly crumbling, and sorely in need of updating. Etc. The public expects teachers to have professional training, act professionally, but they lack sometimes basic resources and are expected to function in an environment that feels more like a dungeon than an institution of learning. The citizens of Clarkstown, if they could get a tour of some of the facilities they are expecting children to learn in, and teachers to teach in, would be very surprised. We do supply some great technology, but then we put it in classrooms with windows that won't stay closed when it's windy, as one example. I spent most of my time in South, which is the best of the bunch, facilities-wise. Clarkstown North is a mess, Woodglen's woods are littered with fallen trees no one's cleaned up after Sandy, Laurel Plains had to be shuttered thanks to that whole foul stench... the district is in a situation where there are major capital improvements that are going to be needed. Buildings are aging, and it seems it's only the most basic of upkeep that happens. The district can't even fix the roofs of the buildings without applying for a state grant.

What professional doesn't spend $500 per year on out of pocket expenses related to their jobs?Read More Staples offering 10% (or 5 in some cases) is hardly an example of the community getting involved. Thankfully, there are other examples of the community and PTA's getting involved and providing needed services. Clarkstown and surrounding areas hardly have substantial unmet needs in their classroom, thankfully.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.
