Welcome to the Community Cares blog, where we spotlight some of the wonderful things county residents and non-profits are doing to make a difference!
At 199 square miles, Rockland is the smallest county by area in New York outside of New York City. Given that approximately one third of the county is parkland, it makes us smaller still. Yet in this small space is a diverse, thriving population, with a strong ethical commitment to service.
As a county with the ninth highest median income in the United States, we can sometimes forget that there is genuine need right here in our own backyard. But our non-profits do not. In fact, there are over 500 public charities in Rockland, dedicated to doing good work across a broad spectrum of interests, from children and families to health care, the arts, our parks and much more. On any given day, they are hard at work both in the public eye and behind the scenes to create a better Rockland for all of us. Equally important are the simple acts of kindness that we hear about every day, and which raise our spirits just to read about them.
Our Community Cares blog salutes both these types of efforts, the big and the small, because they allow us to celebrate what is great about Rockland. Since we are such a small county, our charitable activities can have dramatic results. Given our size, when we donate our time or money within the county, we are truly helping our neighbors.
