New City, NY  (February 11, 2014) – Rockland County Legislator Cornell, a member of the Governor’s Mass Transit Task Force (MTTF), today received the Executive Summary of Recommendations from the Co-Chairs Joan McDonald, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, and Tom Madison, Executive Director of the Thruway Authority.  The Executive Summary will be part of the final report, which they indicate will be completed within the month.  The MTTF has a meeting

Legislator Cornell stated that she looks forward to seeing the entire report and said,  “For years I have called for improved transit options for the residents of Rockland County, and the Mass Transit Task Force has heard those calls.  The combination of short, medium and long-term recommendations will greatly enhance West of Hudson transportation options, reduce travel times and make it easier for commuters to reach Manhattan and other growing job centers on both sides of the river.  The Task Force recognized months ago the advantages of a true Bus Rapid Transit system (BRT) because of its flexibility and ability to serve the travel markets within and between Rockland and Westchester as well as serving Manhattan-bound commuters. Much of the Executive Summary focuses on short-term recommendations to create and enhance BRT. As Chair of the newly-formed Rockland Legislature’s Special Committee on Transit, I will continue to advocate for West of Hudson transit improvements and the needed implementation of those recommendations.  There is much to be done, and the Mass Transit Task Force has made a good start.”
