Wolfe Applauds State Action to Secure Student Information

Alden H. Wolfe, Chairman of the Rockland County Legislature, commended Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature for passing legislation in the 2014/15 budget that establishes strict protection and data security requirements for student personal identifiable information and establishes comprehensive transparency concerning the collection and sharing of data, while ensuring that appropriate educational and operational data-sharing can occur.  Earlier this year, the County Legislature passed a resolution sponsored by Chairman Wolfe, which called upon the State Legislature to pass legislation proposed in both the Assembly and the Senate that would protect the privacy of students by prohibiting the release the information by the State Education Department.

“I’m pleased by the actions of the Governor and the State Legislature to protect the privacy of New York students,” said Chairman Wolfe, “and that the threat of this controversial program is eliminated.  Moreover, I am pleased that we added our voice to denounce this plan along with school superintendents, school boards, parent–teacher organizations and education advocates.  The plan was intrusive in the worst way possible - that a student’s personal information and performance could be used for marketing and profit.”
