2013-2014 Clarkstown School Calendar Adopted

Board of Education approved calendar with start and end dates for the 2013-2014 school year and days off and discussed telecommunications courses.

The Clarkstown Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. The board approved the start and end dates for the next school year, early dismissal days and days off for holidays and recesses. Board member Wendy Adolff suggested the calendar show that the February 3 and March 14, 2014 Superintendent’s Conference Days could be used as snow makeup days. On Superintendent’s Conference Days, students have the day off but teachers typically have training sessions or special programs.

Adolff said it would avoid the confusion caused this year because of the lengthy school closing from Hurricane Sandy.

“So parents know what days we’re going to use instead of going back and forth like we did this year,” said Adolff.

The board agreed with her recommendation to make a notation to the calendar that if extra days are needed as Snow Makeup Days, the two 2014 Superintendent’s Conference Days would be used for that purpose. The calendar already had four snow makeup days built into it.

The board also discussed adding telecommunications courses at the high schools. Course catalogs at the district’s two high school differ. Board members talked about starting a pilot program to give students at each high school the opportunity to take a class offered at the other school.

District Director of Instructional Technology John Krouskoff said the group learning capacity is available and the district has the technical capability to offer telecommuting courses.

Superintendent Dr. J. Thomas Morton said David Jacob, the new coordinator of secondary education, is investigating the concept. Jacob, previously an assistant principal at Clarkstown North, said the idea was viable but he needed to discuss it with both principals.

Adolff asked about offering a pilot program for the fall and giving a survey to rising juniors and seniors to rate five classes in order of interest.

“I think it’s a great idea,” she said, adding it would expose the students to technology and telecommunications.

Board President Joe Malgieri said there were numerous considerations to be ironed out before the district could implement a program.

“How would we structure it? How many kids do we want to have? What are the unions going to say about this?  Would we have a teacher in that room? Would we have a TA in that room?” he asked.

Adolff suggested a minimum of six students in order to offer the class in the second high school.  She said a teaching assistant would be appropriate since there would be a teacher teaching the course.

“Whatever is offered at North should be offered at South,” she said.

“The opportunities for kids in both schools is fantastic,” said board member Robert Alan Carlucci.

Thank you Mrs. Adolff for listening to the community and understanding us. It's refreshing to see our elected officials finally listening for a change. At least now there is a plan in place "just in case" we exceed our snow days and parents don't have to guess what the Board and Admin are going to do! In regards to telecommunication classes...what a terrific idea. I know this has been kicking around in Clarkstown for several years and to finally see someone starting to get the ball rolling is wonderful.
Once again, thank you Mrs.Adolff and the entire School Board for finally working together for the betterment of our children!!!

It is high time that Clarkstown offer students the opportunity to take THE SAME courses at both high schools. The long existing disparity in course offerings between North and South is no longer justifiable given the easy and affordable access to technology that would allow inter-school teleconferencing.
As Ms. Adolff said, “Whatever is offered at North should be offered at South.” No one can disagree with that! A fully implemented educational teleconferencing program will provide enhanced curriculum opportunities for students and access to a wide spectrum of opportunities at other learning institutions both here and abroad. "What are the Unions going to say about this?" Certainly both the Teachers' Union and the Teacher Assistants' Union understand the importance of education moving forward and into the future better than anyone! I would expect that they would embrace the chance to preserve jobs and create new jobs requiring specialized technology skills. Clarkstown, it is time to do this!

It's great to see that potential make up days will now be listed on the calendar, but it's interesting that what wasn't touched upon in the article was the late start date (1 week after Labor Day), the two weeks off for Christmas recess and the later than usual end date (two days into the last week of June). As a working parent, juggling all the planned days off, as well as the unexpected for storms, it has been tough enough, but now there are three weeks after most camps end and then the two weeks for Christmas to worry about. Yes, there are terrifc programs offered by the Y and the JCC that cover some of this, and that we do take advantage of, but it seems that the children are out of school more and more. I understand that they aren't in school any less than other years, but when you add in all the meeting days, early dismals, etc, the calendar of learning looks very empty. And no, I don't view the school as my babysitter, I don't work to support my fancy lifestyle...it's quite the opposite...our two family household probably makes less than most single family incomes in the district, we have a very small condo, 10 yr plus old basic cars, no vacations, no dinners out, taxes that keep going up, etc. It's just very frustrating to see a calendar like this come out, especially with the "spin" of the article. Again, yes, it's great that they put the make up days on the calendar, so thank you for that.

I hope the 3 former board members who were given the boot last May see what an honest and ethical board focused on children can achieve. Now go back into LaLa Land where you belong!

Gee...I didn't think God was supposed to hold grudges and be so bitter... How sad for you that you just can't focus on the fact that things seem to be going well...maybe you need a little prayer?

The late start date is due to the Jewish holidays. The 2 weeks of winter break are due to the way Christmas and New Years fall and getting out of school later than usual is due to the calendar this year. Even though it seems like a lot of time off your children are now going back to school on Election Day which was usually a day off and the children do not get the Friday before Memorial Day any longer. The children are still in session 180 days which is the minimum the state requires.

And that we have an honest and ethical superintendent, thank you Tom!

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant

Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 08:08 am
An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest. Mr. Borelli, shame on you for accepting a private communication and not standing by your guidance to Mr. Lettre that he was to come back to an open meeting of the Town Board.

The traffic from the nearby Palisades Parkway is more of a noise nuisance than the cicada chorus.Read More (We have triple-paned windows because of it.) There is something almost musical about the hum of the cicadas. Of course, it may bother me more if I lived in the "affected area" and heard it constantly. Upon entering this nearby neighborhood, the sound crescendos. And yet, it can't be heard a couple of streets away. The drone of locusts is more bothersome than these 17 year cicadas.
