Back to School in Clarkstown: What's on the List?

Parents spend about $688 on back-to-school expenses. That covers school supplies and clothes.

From to Target to  to  to , the back-to-school commercials are officially in overdrive and the brighly colored flyers are piling up. And in New City, the beginning of the school year is not far away.

For the parents and caregivers out there, that means lots of shopping for notebooks, backpacks, laptops and locker decor during these few remaining weeks.

On average, folks with kids in grades K-12 will spend $688.62 on back-to-school supplies this year, according to a survey by the National Retail Foundation. That's up from the average of $603.63 last year, the NRF reports.

The Clarkstown School District posts two supply lists on its website. One is for personal and organizational items for kindergarten through fifth grade. The other is a general list of school supplies for students from kindergarten through eighth grade with a notation that the classroom teacher will share information about specific quantities needed.

What is the must-have item that tops your student's list this year? Is it an item of clothing, a pair of shoes, notebooks, or technology?

I'm thinking of buying my 8th grader a back support brace so he doesn't damage his spine lugging a 12 lb book bag around all day. Seriously, it's time that the school board implemented a weight limit for each class. 1 lb/class should do it. Why is that so hard? Just do it and let the teachers figure out how to conform to the new rule.

Mike, I agree--this is a huge problem. I have brought it to the attention of the Felix Festa administrators (including a Moms Talk column on the Patch last year) and they don't seem to feel it is a concern. They feel that there is time during the day for the children to get to their lockers, though in reality this is not always the case. Here's my article from last year: http://newcity.patch.com/articles/our-childrens-backpacks-are-too-heavy As I said there, I challenge the administrators to walk around all day carrying the same proportion of weight on their backs as the students do. I think we'd see some changes if they truly understood how difficult this is.

Thank goodness we have you to solve all of our problems. 12 lbs.. wow.. that's half again the weight of a gallon of milk! By the way, the School district already addressed this..
