Board Vote To Finalize Lease For St. Augustine's School

The Clarkstown Board of Education will vote tonight on the official lease of St. Augustine’s School for use by Congers Elementary School students. The cost for the rental from October 1 through June 30, 2014 will be $194,999.99. The cost of utilities will be shared with the school district paying 70 percent and St. Augustine’s paying 30 percent.

According to the lease, the district will provide custodians and St. Augustine’s will be responsible for clearing snow and ice and maintaining and repairing the building.

The students, who were forced to relocate to three other district elementary schools after Congers was declared unsafe in late August, are expected to start attending classes at St. Augustine’s on Tuesday, Oct. 15.  The transfer of classroom materials and furnishings will take place this weekend.

Board members will vote to set Wednesday, Dec. 11th for the budget vote and trustee elections for the New City and West Nyack libraries. The closure of Congers Elementary School changes where voting will take place.

Election districts one and three will vote at the New City Library instead of at Clarkstown South High School and Link Elementary School. District two voters who were assigned to Congers Elementary will also vote at the New City Library. District four voters will continue to cast their ballots at the West Nyack Library. Both libraries will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for voting unless inclement weather delays it until December 18th.

A Memorandum of Understanding for the evacuation of Rockland BOCES Jesse Kaplan School students and staff to Felix Festa Middle School in the event of an emergency will be presented to the board. According to the memorandum, the evacuee students would be registered and accommodated at Festa until their families arrive or they can be moved to a congregate care center.

Also on the board’s agenda is a resolution to increase facility use fees by two percent for the 2013-2014 school year.

The board is expected to approve the following donations:

  • $500 from the Clarkstown North PTSA for library materials
  • Two Smart Boards and $8,230 in cash to cover the cost of their installation and electric from the Laurel Plains Elementary School PTA
  • Twenty $50 gift cards received by the West Nyack Elementary School PTA through Walmart’s Teacher’s Rewards Program. The gift cards will be distributed to teachers for the purchase of classroom supplies and nutritious snacks for disadvantaged students.
The school board meeting begins at 8 p.m. at 62 Old Middletown Road in New City.
