New City Chamber of Commerce President Steve Weissblatt announced the organization will award two $2,000 scholarships to Clarkstown High School seniors this spring.
Weissblatt noted this is the first time the Chamber will be presenting two scholarships. The focus of the scholarships is on community involvement.
“The chamber now has two awards we are offering to two high school seniors, one from North, one from South,” said Weissblatt. “Each will receive a $2,000 scholarship for college.”
The four-page application is available online.
Applicants will be asked to provide details of 40 hours of community service during the past two years. They must complete a form asking for the name of the organizations they volunteered with, location/s, the type of service they provided, the dates and hours of volunteering. Seniors will be asked where they are applying to college and what type of community service they expect to be involved with while attending college.
Three letters of recommendation about their community service activities are required as well as one from their guidance counselor. The application form includes a 100-word essay on their community service involvement. A high school transcript is not required.
The submission deadline for the application is May 7 and the completed forms can be submitted to the or either the Clarkstown North or South high school guidance office. The scholarships will be presented to the two winners at the Clarkstown Board of Education meeting on Thursday, June 7.
