New City Resident On USMMA's First Women's Lacrosse Team

Senior Kristen Bell is on the roster for the upcoming inaugural season which begins Feb. 23.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point is set to kick off its inaugural season of women's lacrosse next month with New City resident Kristen Bell, one of three New Yorkers on the roster. Bell, a senior, will play as an attacker on the team.

“The Academy has a great tradition of excellent athletics and I look forward to adding another successful program to that tradition,” said USMMA Director of Athletics Sue Petersen Lubow in a press release.

The Mariners will compete as an independent team in 2013 before taking on a full Landmark Conference schedule in 2014.

In October, Lubow named Kyle Simensky as head coach of women’s lacrosse at USMMA.

"We feel he is an outstanding coach and will be successful leading our women into their first season,” said Lubow.

Simensky spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the USMMA's men's lacrosse team in 2009-10 and was part of the 2009 squad that captured a Landmark Conference Championship. Most recently, he has served as an assistant coach and physical education teacher in the Locust Valley school district.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to start the women’s lacrosse program here at Kings Point,” said Simensky. “The Academy has a great tradition of excellent athletics and I look forward to adding another successful program to that tradition.”

As a player at Cortland State, Simensky made three consecutive appearances in the national championship game from 2006-2008 and won a Division III National Championship in 2006. He was named a SUNYAC All-Conference performer in his senior season.

In recent months, Simensky has worked to round out the 2013 roster which includes players from across the nation, including three from New York.

Seniors Kristen BellLauren Callahan from Mineola and Nancy Barriga from Queens all made the inaugural roster for the Mariners.

Three of the team's 11 games this season are scheduled to be played at Kings Point.

What professional doesn't spend $500 per year on out of pocket expenses related to their jobs?Read More Staples offering 10% (or 5 in some cases) is hardly an example of the community getting involved. Thankfully, there are other examples of the community and PTA's getting involved and providing needed services. Clarkstown and surrounding areas hardly have substantial unmet needs in their classroom, thankfully.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.

George, don't you have enough to do straightening out the affairs of Clarkstown. Overtime in theRead More Police Department is rampant and the Town Attorney is out of control. As Tom Nimick says, we need an outside auditor for that operation since taxpayers were abused with the hiring of a political operative Jay Savino who I understand is singing like a canary. Get on the right side George before the FBI comes a lookin" I hear that the Gromack war chest is the first place they are looking for clues. Do the right thing George or you will get trampled with the rest of them.

Congratulations, George. Now about your other responsibilities as a member of the Town Board withRead More primary oversight over budget and expenditures: Won't you be the one to propose the needed audit of the Office of Town Attorney? You know the problems exist - likely you know more about the problems than I do. It is sad to see you silent in the face of the abuse of patronage. When will we hear your voice on it?

The new format is attractive but it is hard to find the comments that go with stories.
