New City Residents Earn Academic Degrees, Honors

New City residents recently earned college degrees and academic recognition.

The State University of New York at Potsdam awarded baccalaureate and master's degrees to 158 students in December 2013 including Alexandra Harris, who earned a degree in Speech Communication. She was also named to the President's List along with Ashley Wixon, whose major is English Writing, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Fall 2013 semester. To achieve the honor, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically graded semester hours, with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Erin Davidowicz was named to the President's List at The State University of New York at Geneseo for the fall semester 2013. To be on the list, a student must have achieved an A in all coursework, 4.0 grade point average, while taking at least 12 credit hours.

Sarah Vitro of was one of 12 students inducted into SUNY Oneonta's Edward K. Griesmer chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary, a branch of the National Association of Colleges and University Residence Halls, in November. Made up of the top one percent of student leaders on campus, NRHH recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to the residence hall community. Vitro is a senior majoring in environmental science.

Dominican College recognized students for academic achievement at the annual Honors Convocation on November 25. During the ceremony, students who were named to the Dean's List for one or more complete years were awarded a symbol appropriate to academic excellence. The colored tassels signify the sustained quality of their academic work at Dominican. White tassels were awarded for superior achievement for one complete academic year and red tassels for exceptional accomplishment for two complete academic years. The Honors Convocation also included induction of students into Alpha Chi, the national honor society. These students have pledged themselves to both scholarship and service. Dan Justin Simpelo received a red tassel. Maria Tingson received a red tassel and became a member of Alpha Chi. Jan-Yves Amit received a white tassel and became a member of Alpha Chi.

Local residents named to the Deans' List for the fall 2013 semester at SUNY Oswego include: Jesse T. Cohen, a sophomore majoring in human development; Christine E. Czarnecky, a sophomore studying creative writing; Nathalie H. Escano, a junior majoring in childhood education; Andrew R. Funfgeld, a senior studying broadcasting and mass communication; Joseph Henriques, a sophomore majoring in computer science; Julie L. McCarthy, a junior studying broadcasting and mass communication; and Lesley A. Semel, junior majoring in journalism. To be included on the Deans' List, students must have a semester grade average of 3.30 to 3.79.

The University of Scranton has announced its Dean's List for 2013 fall semester. A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours to make the Dean's List. New City locals named to the list were Brannan Carlucci, a sophomore with a community health education major in Scranton's Panuska College of Professional Studies, and Theresa Fasolino, a junior with a community health education major in Scranton's Panuska College of Professional Studies.
