Clarkstown Central School District Clerk Lilyane Lorusso said petitions are available for candidates interested in running for the board of education. As of Wednesday, three people had picked up petitions. Two seats, currently held by incumbents Diane Hoeneveld and Robert Alan Carlucci, are up for election in May.
Both Hoeneveld and Carlucci said they have not made a firm decision on whether to run again.
“I have not made a decision as of yet,” said Carlucci, who is finishing his first three-year term. “The board is so much more functional now.”
Hoeneveld, who is serving her third term, said, “I’m sitting on the fence leaning toward yes.”
Petitions are available at the district clerk’s office at 62 Old Middletown Road, New City, Monday through Friday. Completed petitions will be accepted by the clerk’s office until Monday, April 22 at 5 p.m. Then the petition signatures must be validated and at that point, the candidate's name can be released.
Candidates must have 94 signatures of residents of the Clarkstown Central School District. Lorusso advises candidates to obtain at least 15 additional signatures because some people who sign the nominating petition may not be qualified to do so. The number of required signatures equals two percent of the 4,686 votes cast in the 2012 school board election and budget vote.
The school board elections and school budget vote take place on Tuesday, May 21. Hoeneveld and Carlucci’s current terms will end on June 30. The terms for school board trustees elected in May begin on July 1.
