Boulders Beat Newark On Walk Off Homer

Hutchins’ blast in the 9th seals Boulders third-consecutive win, 4-3.

In front of a record 6,300 fans, Norm Hutchins hit a walkoff home run to give the Rockland Boulders the 4-3 victory over the Newark Bears at Provident Bank Park on Sunday night in Can-Am League baseball action.

Hutchins, a Westchester County native, capped off a 2-for-4 evening with his seventh home run of the season and his first walkoff on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie.

Former New York Met Howard Johnson made his debut with the Boulders in Sunday night’s contest.  The 50-year old switch hitter went hitless in four at bats from the three-hole in the Rockland lineup, but successfully made contact in each trip to the plate.

After three scoreless innings, the Bears got on the board first in the top of the fourth.  Burt Reynolds got things started with a leadoff double, and was later knocked in on Danny Santiesteban’s one-out triple.  Santiesteban scored later in the inning on a passed ball to leave Newark with a 2-0 lead.

The Boulders bounced right back in the home half of the fourth with a rally of their own.  With one away, three straight Rockland batters reached base to load the bases for Ryan Mollica.  He then stroked a double into the gap in left field to clear the bases and give the Boulders a 3-2 lead.

Newark tied the game up at three runs apiece in the top of the seventh on Tyler Benzel’s RBI double, scoring Billy Alvino from first.

The Boulders (20-24, 39-51) take on the Newark Bears today afternoon in the season finale of their inaugural 2011 season in the Can-Am League.  First pitch is slated for the special Labor Day start time of 2:05 p.m.

Jonathan Velasquez (8-5), with his 2.57 ERA at Provident Bank Park, makes his final start of the season for the Boulders today.

What professional doesn't spend $500 per year on out of pocket expenses related to their jobs?Read More Staples offering 10% (or 5 in some cases) is hardly an example of the community getting involved. Thankfully, there are other examples of the community and PTA's getting involved and providing needed services. Clarkstown and surrounding areas hardly have substantial unmet needs in their classroom, thankfully.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.

George, don't you have enough to do straightening out the affairs of Clarkstown. Overtime in theRead More Police Department is rampant and the Town Attorney is out of control. As Tom Nimick says, we need an outside auditor for that operation since taxpayers were abused with the hiring of a political operative Jay Savino who I understand is singing like a canary. Get on the right side George before the FBI comes a lookin" I hear that the Gromack war chest is the first place they are looking for clues. Do the right thing George or you will get trampled with the rest of them.

Congratulations, George. Now about your other responsibilities as a member of the Town Board withRead More primary oversight over budget and expenditures: Won't you be the one to propose the needed audit of the Office of Town Attorney? You know the problems exist - likely you know more about the problems than I do. It is sad to see you silent in the face of the abuse of patronage. When will we hear your voice on it?

The new format is attractive but it is hard to find the comments that go with stories.
