Pearl River Girls Soccer Falls in States

Cornwall rallied to beat Pearl River, 2-1, in the regional semifinals Saturday at Arlington.

Less than 24 hours after beating Somers on penalty kicks for the Section 1 Championship, Pearl River took the field against Section 9 Champion Cornwall at Arlington in the first round of the state tournament.

Pearl River took a one-goal lead into halftime, but could not hold the advantage. Caroline Staudle scored on a header with 1:43 remaining to give Cornwall the 2-1 victory over Pearl River in the regional semifinal game.

"Four games in six days just killed us in the end," Pearl River Head Coach Tim Peabody said. "We outplayed them, but couldn't finish well with numbers in the box. Just too much fatigue."

Senior forward Casey Walsh scored Pearl River's lone goal on an assist by senior midfielder Marissa Scognamiglio in the 27th minute. It was Walsh's sixth goal and ninth point in five playoff games. Freshman goalie Lauren Gallagher made 11 saves for Pearl River, which finished the season 16-2-3.

Cornwall will play Section 4 Champion Vestal in the regional finals.

you girls are awesome! what a season , undefeated league champs , section 1 class A champs. it was a great time to be a fan because you girls never once let us down. Even in defeat it took an incredible diving header finish , and a less than reasonable schedule to take you girls out. there is a silver lining to the loss , you remaining girls will no longer have to hear my crazy yelling at the games. again you girls made your section , county , school and parents very proud. I of course was continually amazed by my baby girl , Casey , who , like all of you , continually left everything out on the field.stay sweet off the field and fierce on it !! you girls rock. Seniors - thanks for the great effort you all put in and your stellar leadership. it was fun to watch.
