Pearl River Sports: Doherty Ranks Dandy Dozen; Degnan Lights Up Scoreboard

Former Pearl River Athletic Director Tom Doherty offered up his rankings of the top teams in all Rockland County sports as the playoffs approach, with the Pearl River girls basketball team coming in No. 6.

Pearl River's girls basketball team entered this week two games from going undefeated against Rockland County competition during the regular season.

The Pirates improved to 15-2 overall with Monday's 66-41 victory at Tappan Zee, earning themselves a spot among the top teams in all of Rockland County winter sports as the playoffs approach.

Former Pearl River Director of Athletics Tom Doherty recently shared his latest Dandy Dozen, ranking the top 12 winter teams in Rockland County regardless of sport, as most are either into the post-season or about to start.

North Rockland's undefeated girls bowlling team topped the rankings, with Peral River's girls basketball team at No. 6. These were put together before Monday's contests, so they did not take into account developments such as North Rockland's victory over Spring Valley in boys basketball or two consecutive losses by Albertus Magnus in boys basketball.

The rankings are as follows, with a tie at No. 12 (something of a tradition for Doherty):

  1. North Rockland girls bowling (undefeated at 131-0)
  2. Suffern ice hockey (moved up two spots to No. 3 in latest state poll)
  3. Suffern girls track (won 12th consecutive Rockland County Indoor Championship)
  4. North Rockland Wrestling (won fifth consecutive Rockland County Championship)
  5. Suffern boys track (Upset league champion North Rockland at Rockland County Championships)
  6. Pearl River girls basketball (undefeated in Rockland County)
  7. Spring Valley boys basketball (carried a 13-game winning streak into Monday's games)
  8. Nanuet wrestling (finished second in county championships)
  9. North Rockland boys basketball (battling Spring Valley for league title and possibly top seed in Section 1 Class AA playoffs)
  10. Albertus Magnus boys basketball
  11. Suffern boys swimming (undefeated Rockland League champions)
  12. (tie) Clarkstown North girls gymnastics (undefated league champions) and North Rockland boys bowling (leads county league)

Degnan Keeps Scoring

Pearl River honored its seniors before Monday's boys basketball home game against Hastings, but it was junior Kevin Degnan who continued to fill up the score sheet.

The 6-foot-7 forward scored 35 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Pearl River's 53-41 victory.
