Funeral Home Offers Partygoers A Safe Ride Home From New Year's Eve Celebrations

Volunteers to serve as drivers from midnight to 4 a.m.

Don Cranston deals with death every day — he runs a funeral home in Haverstraw.

But on New Year’s Eve, his business becomes all about life, and making sure people get home safe from a night of partying.

Cranston and T.J. McGowan Funeral Home, where he is the general manager, are again hosting an annual New Year’s Eve Safe Drive Program. It’s simple: If you shouldn’t be driving because you’ve been drinking, they’ll come pick you up and take you home.

Although the program focuses on Haverstraw and Stony Point, Emily Dominquez, one of the volunteers in the program, says she and other volunteers don’t turn down anyone who calls for a ride.

“If I can save one life, it will be successful event,” said Cranston.

The program runs from midnight to 4 a.m., with volunteer drivers picking up partygoers in vans rented for the New Year’s Eve effort.

Last year, the volunteers in the program provided more than 45 rides. Dominquez noted that some callers even ask if they can get a ride in the funeral home’s hearse. In the past, the hearse was indeed called into service to give a few rides, but this year the hearse is expected to be reserved for company business only.

Here’s how the program works:

Call:  TJ McGowan at 845-429-2130

Hours: Midnight until 4 a.m.

Passengers: They’ll drive you and your guest home.

Cost: The program requests a small donation, which will go to United Way of Rockland.

Snack: Passengers get a bottle of water and a bagel.

Dominguez said the volunteers involved with the program take pride in the fact that there were no drunken driving arrests or DWI-related accidents last New Year’s Eve in North Rockland, where the Safe Drive Program is focused.

On the roads tonight, police throughout Rockland County say there will be extra patrols, with officers on the watch for impaired and drunk drivers. Special checkpoints and roving patrols throughout the Rockland area since Thanksgiving have resulted in numerous DWI arrests throughout the county.

What professional doesn't spend $500 per year on out of pocket expenses related to their jobs?Read More Staples offering 10% (or 5 in some cases) is hardly an example of the community getting involved. Thankfully, there are other examples of the community and PTA's getting involved and providing needed services. Clarkstown and surrounding areas hardly have substantial unmet needs in their classroom, thankfully.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.

George, don't you have enough to do straightening out the affairs of Clarkstown. Overtime in theRead More Police Department is rampant and the Town Attorney is out of control. As Tom Nimick says, we need an outside auditor for that operation since taxpayers were abused with the hiring of a political operative Jay Savino who I understand is singing like a canary. Get on the right side George before the FBI comes a lookin" I hear that the Gromack war chest is the first place they are looking for clues. Do the right thing George or you will get trampled with the rest of them.

Congratulations, George. Now about your other responsibilities as a member of the Town Board withRead More primary oversight over budget and expenditures: Won't you be the one to propose the needed audit of the Office of Town Attorney? You know the problems exist - likely you know more about the problems than I do. It is sad to see you silent in the face of the abuse of patronage. When will we hear your voice on it?

The new format is attractive but it is hard to find the comments that go with stories.
