They participated in the Great American Cleanup.

Roughly 65 kids, parents and teachers gathered at Link Elementary Saturday morning to walk around the campus picking up trash.

The group was out cleaning around the school grounds as part of the Great American Cleanup, a national effort to improve communities throughout the country. Locally the event is sponsored by Keep Rockland Beautiful.

The kids and others walked around with pickers, digging through the leaves and grassy areas around the school to find old cans, plastic bottles and assorted garbage. The group carried separate garbage bags for items to be recycled as well.

Included were members from a few different Girl Scout troops. The students cleaning ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade, all students at the school. This was the second year the group has gotten together to cleanup Link as part of the Great American Cleanup.

"Anytime we can do something to help out the environment, we try to do it," said Christina Calandrello, who organized the event. "It's always good to get the kids out helping the school and the community."

Plenty of other organizations will hold their own Great American Cleanup events in the next few weeks and are still looking for volunteers. For more information about the ongoing cleanup effort, including a schedule of when others are picking up garbage, click here.
