Monday, Oct. 28 

Common Core Learning Standards Forum

New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. John B. King will participate in one of a series of forums regarding Common Core Learning Standards and other educational reforms from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Port Chester Middle School. The forum may be well out of the area, but of the sessions scheduled so far, it is the closest option for Rockland County residents. Read more here. 

Haunted Rockland

Join supernatural investigator Linda Zimmermann at the New City Library at 220 North Main Street. Beginning at 7 p.m. she will share her latest cases of unexplainable activity in the area, along with some little-known stories from the past.

Clarkstown School District Community Workshop

The second Community Workshop on the next school year’s budget begins at 7 p.m. at the Chestnut Grove District Offices at 62 Old Middletown Road in New City.

Surviving The Storm

The United Way of Rockland is partnering with UNION Restaurant and Bar Latino in Haverstraw to host a special evening to raise funds for those still dealing with the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. UNION Restaurant will offer its regular menu from 5 p.m. until closing and will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to aid families still suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Diners may make additional donations. Union Restaurant is located at 22 New Main Street in the Village of Haverstraw. 

Rockland County Legislative Committees Meet

The proposed 2014 budget for Rockland County will be presented to the Budget & Finance Committee at 7:15 p.m. Several other legislative committees will meet earlier: Public Safety at 5:30 p.m., Multi Services at 6 p.m. and Planning & Public Works at 7 p.m. The meetings take place at 11 New Hempstead Road in New City. 

Albertus Magnus High School Open House

 Clarkstown Common Core Learning Standards Parent Meeting

The Clarkstown School District is holding a meeting on Common Core Learning Standards for parents from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at its Chestnut Grove offices at 62 Old Middletown Road in New City. The Curriculum Team will present an overview of the Shifts in ELA and Math Instruction informed by the Common Core Learning Standards. They will provide an opportunity for parents to sample the new learning experiences for students and ask questions

Forum On The Affordable Health Care Act

Join Senator David Carlucci at a forum to help community members understand the changes under the federal health care law and how the New York State and Rockland County departments of health can help individuals navigate through the new information. The forum is open to the public and runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the New City Library at 220 North Main Street.

Author Judith Viorst Visits Rockland

Judith Viorst, bestselling author of poetry, fiction and non-fiction for children and adults, will visit the Rockland Jewish Community Campus in West Nyack to talk about Suddenly Sixty and Other Shocks of Later Life, a title in Viorst’s beloved “decade” series of age-related poetry. The event is presented by Rockland Jewish Family Service and is open to people of all faiths. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at West Nyack Road.

A safe trick or treat choice for children age 12 and under! Visit Provident Bank Park in Pomona, home of the Rockland Boulders, for free Halloween games, candy and live DJ from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Go Red For Women Luncheon

The American Heart Association (AHA) announced that tickets are still available for the Tri-County Go Red For Women Luncheon at West Hills Country Club in Middletown. The event supports the research and education programs of the AHA. Nationally recognized comedian and “laughter therapist” Diane Jordan will be featured speaker. Jordan is a stand-up comedian and author of A Wife’s 
little Instruction Book, Your Survival Guide to Marriage Without Bloodshed! 

The annual Go Red For Women Luncheon is a half-day of health and wellness education, empowerment and transformation. It is part of the Go Red For Women’s national movement to fight heart disease in women – their number one health threat. The luncheon, serving Orange, Rockland and Sullivan counties, features morning educational breakout lectures, heart disease education, uplifting stories, silent auction, health-healthy lunch and a keynote by Jordan.
