Clarkstown School District teachers and administrators will be wearing blue to draw attention to changes in the education system. They are seeking more funds for public schools and colleges and an emphasis on teaching and learning. Click here for more details about their position.

Special Home For the Holidays Pet Adoption Event

Due to severe overcrowding, the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center is holding a very special "Home For The Holidays" adoption event for cats, kittens, dog and puppies through December. Hi-Tor has reduced its adoption fees. Learn more here.

Norman The Scooter Dog Performs

Norman, a scooter and bike riding dog, will perform at the Pet Nutrition Store at 115 Route 59 in Nanuet at 11 a.m. Find out about it here.

Help A Family Or Friend Battling Addiction 

The presentation/discussion will cover the pitfalls/traps awaiting concerned people trying to help an addicted person. The presenters are Dr. Steve Levy, psychologist, founding director of Nyack Recovery Center and director Rockland County Crack Cocaine Program and Paul Maide, CASAC and co-therapist with Dr. Levy. Find details of the program, which begins at 7 p.m. at Temple Beth Torah in Upper Nyack here.

Clarkstown North Winter Concert

The annual winter concert by the Clarkstown High School North Orchestra and Choir begins at 7 p.m. at the high school. There will be a special performance of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus featuring North alumni from 1996 through 2012. Admission to the concert is free. More details can be found here.

Rockland County Legislative Committees 

The legislature’s Public Safety Committee meets at 5:15 p.m. and will recognize the emergency service responders who battled the blaze on Clausland Mountain in November. The Planning & Public Works Committee meets at 7 p.m. and Budget & Finance at 7:15 p.m. All meetings take place at 11 New Hempstead Road in New City and are open to the public. 

Wednesday, Dec. 11

New City Library Budget Vote And Trustee Elections

The vote on the New City and West Nyack libraries budget and to fill New City Library three trustee positions will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the New City Library at 220 North Main Street.  Districts 1, 2 and 3 will vote at the New City Library while District 4 will vote at the West Nyack Free Library. Absentee ballots for the trustee election are available weekdays 9 a.m. until Tuesday, Dec. 10 in the library's administrative office or download it by clicking here. Trustee ballots must be returned to the polling place by 5 p.m. on December 11. Eight candidates are running for the three trustee seats. Read their statements here.

United Hospice’s Annual Tree Lighting

United Hospice of Rockland (UHR) kicks off its annual Tree of Life Celebration at the Palisades Center on Level One, near Banana Republic at 7:30 p.m. The lighting will feature a special ceremony, complimentary refreshments and entertainment by the Dominican College Chorale. Thursday, Dec. 12

Clarkstown Board of Education

The Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m. and the superintendent is expected to recommend that the district opt out of the Race To The Top program as this article reports. The board is meeting at district offices at 62 Old Middletown Road in New City.

Friday, Dec. 13

West Nyack Rotary Christmas Tree Lighting

Join the West Nyack Rotary Club for its 20th annual Christmas Tree lighting at Hamlet Green Park starting at 7 p.m. Students from Strawtown and West Nyack elementary schools will sing holiday songs. Refreshments will be provided and a fire pit to ward off the winter chill. The festivities will end with Santa arriving via horse and wagon, followed by a fire truck from the West Nyack Fire Engine Company #1. Find out more here.

Rockland Symphony Orchestra Fundraiser 

There will be a gala celebration “A Night At The Opera” to raise funds for the Rockland Symphony. The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature Robert Hobson of the Metropolitan Opera. Get ticket information here

Saint Anthony’s Annual Christmas Concert

The parish choirs, soloists and chamber orchestra will perform. Tickets cost $13 in advance and $15 at the door. They can be purchased at the rectory Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  For more information call Aurora at 623-7657.The 8 p.m. concert will be held at the parish church at 35 West Nyack Road in Nanuet.
