Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School

Several members of the Rockland Jewish community understood the need for an educated, Jewishly-oriented next generation of children. In 1971, they founded the school as the Solomon Schechter Day School of Rockland County. It quickly became a key part of Jewish life in the area. Though the Board of Trustees voted in 1985 to change the name to honor the memory of Reuben Gittelman, who devoted much of his life to strengthening Jewish education and community, the school continues to be a member of the Solomon Schechter Day School Association, a worldwide network of day schools whose commitment to Judaism, Israel, intellectual honesty and educational excellence is shared by all.

The philosophy and purpose of the school are rooted in the principles of the Conservative Movement, advancing students' achievement in all areas of academics and teaching children the laws, customs, ethics and traditions of Judaism, as well as the Hebrew language. The dual curriculum school creates one whole child. Students here are rooted in their identities and heritage.
