Joe Rao: Mars and the Moon Have Night Sky Rendezvous

Meteorologist Joe Rao talks about the distance between the moon and mars.

Late Thursday night, skywatchers who cast a glance toward the waning gibbous moon in the eastern sky will also notice the presence of a very bright, yellow-orange "star" shining with a steady glow hovering a bit above and to the moon's right. That's no star, though. It's the planet Mars. The apparent distance between the moon and Mars will be rather large, amounting to about 9 degrees. That's roughly equal to the width of your fist held at arm's length. The sky map of Mars and the moon for this story shows how they will appear Thursday night to skywatchers with clear skies. FEMA Approval For Irene Debris Removal From Ramapo River

Fallen limbs raised concerns about blockage and threat to nearby pedestrian bridge

Tropical Storm Irene left behind trees, branches and debris in the Ramapo River in Hillburn.  This morning, a local contractor begins clearing out the material that remains from the August storm. Town of Ramapo officials worried a blockage could occur during a heavy rainstorm and even threaten the stability of a nearby pedestrian bridge. The Rockland County Drainage Agency (RCDA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) both inspected the riverbed following a request made in December by the Town of Ramapo.  According to the county executive’s office, both agencies inspected the debris field and obstructions.  Once FEMA determined the debris removal qualified for FEMA relief funding, the county agency agreed to remove the …

Young Artist, Teacher Throws Creativity Into Pretzel Business

Knotty & Nice Pretzels make the perfect Valentine's Day gift...or a treat to make someone smile any day of the year.

Pretzel-design wasn't originally a business for Leah Bernabei, who teaches in New City. At first it was a hobby—or a passion, really.  "But then at family events and parties with friends people started expecting the pretzels," said Bernabei, a third-grade teacher at the closing Reuben-Gittelman Hebrew Day School in New City. Everyone's anticipation of the almost-too-pretty-to-eat, crunchy treats motivated her to get a business certificate last spring and launch "Knotty & Nice Pretzels." A lifelong artist, Bernabei designed her own website and business cards, so—in addition to designing lesson plans for eight year olds—the young teacher found herself envisioning pretzel platters for birthday parties, baby showers and holiday parties. Her …

Pearl River Girls Basketball Stifles Albertus Magnus (VIDEO)

Pearl River celebrated senior recognition day with a 61-43 victory at home against Albertus Magnus.

After breaking her nose in eighth grade, Pearl River's Christa Scognamiglio had to wear a protective face mask while playing basketball. The mask made its return Wednesday, but this time after being handed to Christa's younger sister, Marissa Scognamiglio. “It’s not really easy to play with,” Marissa Scognamiglio said. “I couldn’t really see anything peripherally, when I was dribbling I had to look straight down.” That did not stop Scognamiglio and the rest of the Pirates from beating Albertus Magnus, 61-43, at home on Wednesday to sweep the season series. It was Pearl River's second victory over another top contender in Class A this week. It was during the team's 56-53 victory Monday at Tappan Zee that Scognamiglio collided with teammate …

Albertus Boys Basketball Holds On To Beat Pearl River

The Falcons beat the Pirates for the second time this season, 53-50, at home Wednesday.

Senior forward Tyler Sayre hit a tie-breaking lay-up with 47 seconds remaining to give the Albertus Magnus boys basketball team a lead with it would not relinquish as it beat Pearl River, 53-50, at home Wednesday. “We knew we just had to attack the rim there and hopefully get to the free throw line,” Sayre said. “We were going up strong all game. We didn’t get the foul call but were just happy it went in.” The Pirates (11-7) had a few chances to tie it late, but just couldn’t, giving the Falcons (15-2) a sweep of the two-game season series between the rivals. After Sayre’s lay-up, Pearl River’s Sean Wilson was fouled, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. On the other end, the Pirates fouled Albertus’ James McEntee, who hit just one …

Men Pay Up This Valentine's Season

New research finds that this Valentine's Day Americans, specifically men, are digging deeper into their pockets than ever before.

They say you can’t buy love, but research shows consumers are spending more than ever this Valentine’s season. According to Mother Nature Network, research from the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates the total spending will reach $17.6 billion, with the average person spending more than $126, up nearly 10 percent from last year and the most ever in the survey's 10-year history. Not everyone will dig as deeply into their wallets, however. The average male is expected to spend $168.74 — nearly twice as much as women — on clothing, jewelry and greeting cards, among other things. Data shows consumers spend the most on their better halves, an average of $74. They’ll also spend an average of more than $25 on their children, parents or …

Making Homemade Sweets for the Sweet

Here's how to make homemade Valentine’s Day 'Krispie Treats' that kids will love to make and give.

Memories of my childhood Valentine’s Days always include piles of paper heart doilies, red and pink construction paper, glue and glitter. I adored creating what I was certain were masterpieces, despite the likelihood I misspelled names or inadvertently created glue globs on my homemade hearts. Though I would love to recreate those memories with my own children, I don’t seem to be raising any crafters. I can, however, cajole them into making sweets, especially if those confections include frosting and sprinkles. This year we are making heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats, decorated with melted white chocolate, frosting and sprinkles. They are incredibly easy and fun to make. First, make a batch of Rice Krispie treats - as per the original …
