Feds: Land deal for Monsey Fire District was designed to pay off commissioner's personal debts.
A ex-commissioner of the Monsey Fire District has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for a scheme that used a fire district real estate deal to pay off his personal debts, according to Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Nathan Rothschild pleaded guilty to mail fraud on June 30, 2011. While pleading guilty, Rothschild admitted to participating in a scheme in which he proposed that the fire district purchase a parcel of real estate from a creditor of his without disclosing his person interest in the transaction. Clarkstown police say victim, witnesses providing little cooperation in shooting investigation.
The New Latin Grill in Nanuet, the scene of a Jan. 21 dispute that led to a shooting, has been denied a liquor license and can no longer serve alcohol, according to Clarkstown police. Police said that the shooting and reports of other fights at the New Latin Grill led to a visit to the business on Saturday by Clarkstown police and representatives of the State Liquor Authority to interview owners Hector Flores and Luis Fernando Camargo. Police said Flores and Camargo were advised that the liquor authority has rejected its application for a license. Clarkstown police task force charged trio after incident in Congers.
Three men arrested Friday by a police task force investigating a rash of car break-ins were ordered held in the county jail on $75,000 bail each until a hearing Wednesday in Clarkstown Town Court in New City. Nanuet volunteer firefighters spend more than an hour cutting driver out of wrecked car; northbound side of parkway shut down by accident and investigation.
The driver of a car that slammed into a tree alongside the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Nanuet had to be cut out of the wreckage and then was airlifted to Westchester County Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries this morning, according to Nanuet volunteer firefighters. A Chrysler Pacifica hit a tree broadside around 7:55 a.m. today on the northbound side of the parkway just south of the Exit 10 interchange, doing extensive damage to the car and trapping the driver, according to Nanuet Fire Department Captain Bill Schoenleber. Schoenleber said Central Nyack Fire Chief Michael Healy was on the parkway around the time of the wreck and alerted emergency officials to the crash. A New City man who drove into an earthen embankment at the intersection of North Main Street and New Hempstead Road in New City early Friday morning was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to Clarkstown police. Robert Lee, 37, hit the embankment about 4:30 a.m. Police said that as town officers were investigating the accident they put Lee through a field sobriety test, which he failed. Lee was taken to Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, where police said he failed a chemical breath test for alcohol. Police said they also found that Lee's driver's license had previously been suspended. Included in the crowd was 19-year-old Suffern firefighter Andrew Fredericks, who was 9 years old when his father was killed. "I spent a day at another FDNY house when I was 14. I was with Lt. Brian Curid who showed me around and that's what made me want to become a firefighter," Fredericks said. A New City man who became impatient and honked his horn as traffic was stopped for a funeral procession in Congers was arrested Thursday on drunken driving charges, according to Clarkstown police. Edward Tabaracci, 50, was also cited for drinking alcohol in a vehicle during the 12:15 p.m. incident at Lake Road and Old Haverstraw Road. Police said a town officer was assigned to traffic control at the intersection so a funeral procession could pass. Beating victim has not regained full use of hand injured during beating.
A Haverstraw man has been indicted by a Rockland County grand jury in New City on charges of drunken driving and driving with a revoked license as a result of a hit-and-run incident in 2011, according to District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. Robert Hernandez, 25, of 16 Rockland St., was arrested after a 1:05 a.m. incident on Aug. 20, 2011, in which he was found to be the driver of a car involved in an accident. Zugibe said Hernandez was stopped by police about a half-mile from the scene of the accident, with front-end damage visible on hi car. Zugibe said Hernandez was found to be intoxicated and tests later revealed his blood alcohol content to be .15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit.
