Pearl River Girls Basketball Stifles Albertus Magnus (VIDEO)

Pearl River celebrated senior recognition day with a 61-43 victory at home against Albertus Magnus.

After breaking her nose in eighth grade, Pearl River's Christa Scognamiglio had to wear a protective face mask while playing basketball. The mask made its return Wednesday, but this time after being handed to Christa's younger sister, Marissa Scognamiglio. “It’s not really easy to play with,” Marissa Scognamiglio said. “I couldn’t really see anything peripherally, when I was dribbling I had to look straight down.” That did not stop Scognamiglio and the rest of the Pirates from beating Albertus Magnus, 61-43, at home on Wednesday to sweep the season series. Albertus Boys Basketball Holds On To Beat Pearl River

The Falcons beat the Pirates for the second time this season, 53-50, at home Wednesday.

Senior forward Tyler Sayre hit a tie-breaking lay-up with 47 seconds remaining to give the Albertus Magnus boys basketball team a lead with it would not relinquish as it beat Pearl River, 53-50, at home Wednesday. “We knew we just had to attack the rim there and hopefully get to the free throw line,” Sayre said. “We were going up strong all game. We didn’t get the foul call but were just happy it went in.” The Pirates (11-7) had a few chances to tie it late, but just couldn’t, giving the Falcons (15-2) a sweep of the two-game season series between the rivals. After Sayre’s lay-up, Pearl River’s Sean Wilson was fouled, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. On the other end, the Pirates fouled Albertus’ James McEntee, who hit just one …

Smile For The Camera: Giants' Eli Manning At Disney's Magic Kingdom

Retired Orangetown police officer Steve Fisher bumps into Super Bowl champion quarterback on visit to Magic Kingdom.

You never know who you will meet at Disney's Magic Kingdom in Florida. A co-worker. A friend. Or, maybe Super Bowl champion quarterback Eli Manning from the New York Giants. That's exactly who retired Orangetown police sergeant Steve Fisher bumped into on Monday while visiting the Magic Kingdom. "Eli surprised me as we walked toward each other," said Fisher, who now lives in Florida. "Didn't expect to see him there." Seeing the superstar football player, Fisher quickly snapped some photos of Manning with his Nikon CoolPix camera.   The Top Spot: Albertus Magnus senior Tyler Sayre entered last night’s game against Spring Valley just 10 points away from breaking Antoine Duvert’s school scoring record set in 1994. With 12 points in the first quarter Sayre eclipsed the mark and led the Falcons on their way to an easy 81-63 victory. Sayre finished the game with 24 points and 13 rebounds and now stands alone atop the school’s record books. Pat McGuinness led the Falcons with 26 points in the victory. Clinton, Degnan Lead Pearl River Past Clarkstown North

The Pearl River boys basketball team defeated Clarkstown North, 74-53, at home Monday.

Senior Joe Clinton and sophomore Kevin Degnan each scored 20 points to lead Pearl River to a 74-59 victory at home against Clarkstown North Monday. Austin O'Toole added 15 point. He and Degnan each grabbed eight rebounds for the Pirates, who improved to 11-5 heading into Wednesday's game at Albertus Magnus. Vinny Leshaj scored a team-high 19 points for Clarkstown North.

LaPoint Back Again As Rockland Boulders Manager

Former Yankee looks to improve upon 40-52 finish in 2011.

The Rockland Boulders say that former New York Yankee Dave LaPoint will return as manager for the 2012 season of the Can-Am League professional baseball team.   In 2011, the Boulders first season of play, LaPoint managed the team as it went 40-52, finishing in 5th place.   “This season we will be more prepared when it comes to putting the team on the field.” LaPoint said. “We have acquired some pretty good players in the offseason and are looking to add some more before the season starts. We have a beautiful stadium with great fans. It is our duty to improve on last year by quite a margin and we will do that,” he said. NY Giants Ticker-Tape Parade Set for Tuesday

The Super Bowl champions will be feted by NYC Tuesday.

The celebratory ticker tape parade for the New York Giants—winner of Super Bowl XLVI—will kick off at Battery Place and Washington Street in New York City on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. “Big Blue gave us a game to remember, and on Tuesday we're going to give them a parade to remember,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a statement today. The parade will travel north on the Canyon of Heroes to Worth Street. A ceremony will follow at City Hall, where the mayor will present the Keys to the City to the team.   The Top Spot: A few weeks ago Albertus Magnus senior forward Tyler Sayre eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in a 65-57 win over Xavier. Now that the Giant weekend is over and the regular season is dwindling down the Falcon forward has his opportunity to steal the headlines. Coming into tonight’s game at Spring Valley Sayre stands just 10 points shy of breaking Antoine Duvert’s career scoring record for Albertus Magnus boys varsity basketball. Duvert scored 1,066 career points from 1991-94.
