They participated in the Great American Cleanup.
Roughly 65 kids, parents and teachers gathered at Link Elementary Saturday morning to walk around the campus picking up trash. The group was out cleaning around the school grounds as part of the Great American Cleanup, a national effort to improve communities throughout the country. Locally the event is sponsored by Keep Rockland Beautiful. The kids and others walked around with pickers, digging through the leaves and grassy areas around the school to find old cans, plastic bottles and assorted garbage. The group carried separate garbage bags for items to be recycled as well. Included were members from a few different Girl Scout troops. The students cleaning ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade, all students at the school. This was …

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski took to Route 304 Saturday morning to pick up garbage along with family, friends and colleagues. Some of the familiar folks helping out were his sister, Kristen Zebrowski Stavisky, the county's Democratic Committee chair, Stephanie Hausner, Clarkstown council member, and Dennis Malone, Clarkstown's Mini Trans supervisor. They were cleaning a section of the road as part of the Great American Cleanup, a national effort to improve communities throughout the country. Locally, the event is sponsored by Keep Rockland Beautiful. The group of 10 cleaned up 304 from Cavalry Drive, near McDonald’s up to Cosmos Lane, which leads into Snowdrop Drive. Plenty of other organizations will hold their own Great American Cleanup …

Laurel Plains Elementary School had the past week off from school, but a group of about 25 kindergarteners spent one of their last days of the break at school. The girls from Daisy Troops 40177 and 40222 spent part of their Saturday morning cleaning up litter around the school as part of the Great American Cleanup, a national effort to improve communities throughout the country. Locally the event is sponsored by Keep Rockland Beautiful. The girls, and their parents, put on gloves and filled bags with various items littered around the school and on the playgrounds. One of the garbage items some of the cleaners found particularly interesting was an old softball that looked like a dog had partially bitten off the cover. A few in the group …

It's begun. Keep Rockland Beautiful (KRB) kicked off the 2012 Great American Cleanup (GAC) on Tuesday with a breakfast for the people and board members of Keep Rockland Beautiful, key sponsors and crucial volunteer organizers. They met at City Line Family Restaurant in New City. "With the cleanup this year, we're looking at educating people," said Sonia Cairo, director of KRB. "We're off to a very strong start. We already have (more than 40) teams registered." Thousands of Rockland County residents team up in groups from just a handful of people to hundreds to remove tons of litter from streets, parks and waterways as part of an effort to make communities cleaner, healthier and more beautiful. "I think it's great. The organization is …

The Orangetown Town Supervisor was with the group for 10 years
A few years ago, Andy Stewart was climbing up the the back of a billboard on Route 9W with one thought going through his mind. “This is really stupid,” he thought. “I should not be here right now.” But Stewart, the then-executive director of Keep Rockland Beautiful, kept climbing and eventually hung a banner on the billboard alerting the public to a large cleanup the organization was running. When looking for a visible place to hang the banner, Stewart noticed the billboard empty and called the number to ask about hanging something on it. When he was told he could he then realized he wasn’t too sure actually how to. “I got rope, I got my Subaru and I went out and I climbed up the back of this billboard with ropes,” he said. “I kind of …

The sixth symposium dealt with abandoned houses and illegally converting single residency homes
The Keep Rockland Beautiful Code Enforcement Task Force focused on two big housing issues in the county at its annual symposium Wednesday morning. The Sixth Annual Code Enforcement Symposium was held at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona, and officials from the county spoke on the two issues: people abandoning their homes and single room occupancies being converted so multiple families can live there. “We only hold the symposium when we feel like an issue has gotten bad enough that we need to start talking about how to fix it,” said Orangetown Highway Department Supervisor Jim Dean, a Keep Rockland Beautiful board member who moderated the event. “In this case we felt like we had two issues to discuss.” Keep Rockland …
