Number Of Homeless Students Increasing In Clarkstown

35 homeless students in district

In the Clarkstown School District, the number of homeless students has increased from one child three years ago to 35 children this year.  The district is trying to help with the establishment of a food pantry at the Birchwood School and plans to start a drive to collect clothing donations. School Superintendent Margaret Keller-Cogan said the district has identified 35 homeless students.  There are some students whose families do not have running water and may not have other operating utilities.  Often they will not speak to anyone about their family’s situation but it is the teachers or other staff members who notice.  She thinks the majority of the homeless students attend the Lakewood and Congers elementary schools.  Keller-Cogan said…

Diane, While it is a good thing that the Clarkstown PBA donates thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars a year to worthwhile charities and causes, the unused sick days that their members cash in each year (that we all pay for) total about $2,000,000/year. I hope our Governor will propose legislation that will require sick days to be use em or lose em. To me, it feels like they are taking …   more ›

Many Of County's Food Pantries In Need Of Food, Winter Clothes

Many food pantries around Rockland are looking for donations to help with the holiday season

The Birchwood School’s food pantry opened in September, and Principal Jonathan Slaybaugh said so far the community has been very generous. “We’ve had phone calls from people throughout the county asking what we need and how they can help,” he said. Over the summer, Slaybaugh knew of one family with ties to the school that was in need of help, and so it was decided to reach out to the community. Slaybaugh said after that he heard about others who also needed assistance, and so the school started a food pantry. Slaybaugh said Birchwood’s Regina Baxter and Dr. Deborah Gay have spearheaded the effort at the school’s pantry. The pantry recently received an anonymous $1,000 donation from a member of the New City Rotary Club, Slaybaugh said, …

Ten Rockland Food Pantries Receive Grant Money (VIDEO)

Pantries from around the county were given grant money by the Rockland Community Foundation

For the past four or five years, the Rockland Community Foundation has selected 10 food pantries and donated $500 to each during the holiday season. Half of the money comes from the Foundation, and its $2,500 total is matched by ShopRite. On Tuesday morning, the Rockland Community Foundation’s board met with representatives from most of the food pantries receiving this year’s grants at Clarkstown Town Hall in New City. “There are so many families who are in need here in Rockland County and food pantries typically are the real line to getting assistance to those families,” said Rhea Vogel, vice president of Rockland Community Foundation. The Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for Rockland residents by increasing awareness of …

Rockland County Foundation Honors Innovative Teachers

The non-profit gave out awards Tuesday night to three teachers: One from Clarkstown North and Two from Nanuet

Karen Czajkowski has a problem in her AP and 10th grade English classes where her students won’t stop reading. An unusual problem, but a problem nonetheless. “I have to tell them, ‘Okay, put the books away we have to move on,’” said Czajkowski, who teaches at Clarksown High School North.  The problem with it is that the books her students are reading aren’t technically on the curriculum. Last year, Czajkowski was discouraged with the lack of reading her students were doing. In hopes of sparking something, she enthusiastically started talking to them in class about the books she was reading at home, and even brought them into her class and put them on a shelf. Eventually, she said, a few students would come up to her after class and ask …

Students and teachers alike have benefitted from awards presented by The Rockland Community Foundation this year. Next on the foundation’s list is a Tuesday, Oct. 25 event to raise money for local food pantries, collect non-perishable food items for the Haverstraw Holiday Meals Fund and increase awareness of the organization.    “The purpose is to raise funds so that we can continue our good work that we do each year around the holiday time of providing gift cards for the area food pantries,” said Rhea Vogel, foundation vice president/secretary.
