United Water, Rockland Business Association Honored By Firefighters

Company, group saluted at fundraising event.

United Water and the Rockland Business Association were honored by the Rockland Fire Training Center at its first-ever fundraising dinner on Thursday at Casa Mia in Blauvelt. United Water was recognized for its work with the Fire Training Center in times of emergencies along with its assistance with training and planning. Also honored at the event was longtime Rockland volunteer firefighter Stuart Gates of Stony Point.

Local And State Officials Call For Passage of DNA Databank

Bill would mandate everyone convicted of a crime provide a DNA sample

Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) joined Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy, Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco, District Attorney Tom Zugibe, and other state and local officials at the Rockland Fire Training Center in Ramapo on Wednesday to urge passage of expanding the DNA database. The legislation would mandate that people convicted of all crimes provide a DNA sample.  Currently, just about half of the people convicted of a felony and certain misdemeanor crimes are included in a database.  State and local officials have said the expansion is necessary to improve and update law enforcement tools that would help go after criminals.  The State Senate has already adopted Governor Cuomo’s proposal which now is in the State Assembly.

Keep Rockland Beautiful Hosts Annual Code Enforcement Symposium

The sixth symposium dealt with abandoned houses and illegally converting single residency homes

The Keep Rockland Beautiful Code Enforcement Task Force focused on two big housing issues in the county at its annual symposium Wednesday morning. The Sixth Annual Code Enforcement Symposium was held at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona, and officials from the county spoke on the two issues: people abandoning their homes and single room occupancies being converted so multiple families can live there. “We only hold the symposium when we feel like an issue has gotten bad enough that we need to start talking about how to fix it,” said Orangetown Highway Department Supervisor Jim Dean, a Keep Rockland Beautiful board member who moderated the event. “In this case we felt like we had two issues to discuss.” Keep Rockland …
