Shipwrecked! plays at the Penguin Rep Theater from Aug. 12 through Sept. 4
Once again, Penguin Rep amazes their audience. Donald Margulies' Shipwrecked!—otherwise known as Shipwrecked! An Entertainment: The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (as told by himself)—is a tale of adventure and life told by the very man who experienced it. The play brings up the theme of truth, asking what exactly is true or fiction and, in the end, does it really matter? The cast shines throughout the production, flawlessly dancing from character to character, switching roles seamlessly. Edena Hines and David Arkema are a formidable team, performing every role except Mr. de Rougemont himself, masterfully portrayed by Steven Hauck. Hauck is mesmerizing. The 90-minute show feels like a 20-minute conversation. His quirky portrayal …

The summer program's revival of "Guys and Dolls" opened Friday at Clarkstown South High School.
After a flood temporarily wiped away their beloved Riverspace cultural center earlier this summer, the cast and crew of the Helen Hayes Youth Theater summer camp buoyed themselves with the support of Clarkstown South High School and performed the popular Broadway musical “Guys and Dolls” Friday night. More than 100 people came to the high school for opening night. “I think the performance was excellent; the kids worked so hard,” said Lexie Frare, an assistant director/choreographer for the show. “I was laughing and the parents were laughing. They enjoyed it and you can’t ask for anything more than that.” J.D. Zeik, who came to watch his daughter, Abby Perry-Zeik, perform, said he has seen many of the shows put on by the Helen Hayes Youth …

RSC presented "The Tempest" as part of the annual summer production, which takes place outside in Rockland Community College's courtyard.
Nobody should ever watch Shakespeare inside a theater again. The Rockland Shakespeare Company has proven that the only true way to enjoy the Bard is outside, sitting on a rock wall, just as the sun sets. "The Tempest," the 14th annual outdoor summer Shakespeare production at SUNY Rockland, was the perfect show for this year's performance. First, opening night was delayed due to a terrible storm, eerily paralleling the play. Second, the talent the Rockland Shakespeare Company offers was showcased beautifully. The show follows Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, who uses his masterful art of manipulation and illusion to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place by marrying her to the King of Naples son, Ferdinand. Every actors …

Penguin Theater Theater presents "Greetings!" plays through June 12. Information: (845) 786-2873 or penguinrep.org
One of the best things about the holiday season is the dazzling Christmas light displays that glow from every house in suburbia USA. As a kid, they fill one up with wonder and excitement. As an adult, well, who do you think hangs the dreaded things up every year? Tom Dudzick's "Greetings!"—playing at Rockland's Broadway quality theater Penguin Repertory—tells a beautiful, thought-provoking story of a working class Catholic family at Christmastime. A holiday play without being a holiday play, "Greetings!" gives the audience a lot to think about and discuss. The first act starts out with Phil Gorski (played by Richard Kline, known by many as "Larry" from Three's Company) and his wife Emily (playeed by Beth Fowler, known for her work on …

Rock'n'Roll and Elvis Fever was back at Albertus Magnus as they sockhopped and jived their way through their fantastic production of Bye, Bye Birdie. The show was a collberative effort, with stage crew and cast working as a team to wow the audience. Almost all of the audience consisted of students from Albertus Magnus, who wanted to support their classmates and the drama department at AMHS. As an added bonus, students who saw the show Thursday were allowed to 'dress-down' the next day, meaning they did not have to wear their uniforms to school. The technical aspect of the show went off flawlessly. The pit sounded fantastic, with director Nadia Rizzo on piano and students Adam Gloc and Timothy Choi. Considering that the school doesn't have …

"The Graduate," based on the movie of the same name, plays at 8 p.m. Feb. 4 & 5 and 2 p.m. Feb 6.
Tickets $20 adults / $18 for Students and Seniors
http://www.antrimplayhouse.com/ for tickets and more info.
Considered one of the greatest films of all time by the American Film Institute, The Graduate tore down the façade of the perfect 1950’s American family and showed true, raw humans. Adapted for theater in 2000, it is just as eye-opening now as it was when first shown in 1967. Antrim Playhouse’s production of The Graduate honors everything the movie originally featured and makes for a fantastic evening out. Only open for one more weekend, nobody should pass up an opportunity to see this stupendous production. Brooke Malloy, director, has a keen eye for sightlines, emphasizing the humor of the play. One favorite example is when a paranoid Ben calls Mrs. Robinson from 10 feet away in the hotel lobby. The actors turn to each other in such a …

The Man Who Came to Dinner 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12-13 and 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at Albertus Magnus. www.showtix4u.com to purchase tickets
If you're looking for a perfect night out, look no further. For $30 a ticket, audience members will be treated to an Italian dinner from Posa Posa and a night of theater at Albertus Magnus' production of The Man Who Came to Dinner by Kaufman and Hart. Last year, AMHS drama club performed a murder mystery which incorporated the audience's dinner. The idea was such a hit that they decided to make it an annual event. Nadia Rizzo, the musical and dramatic director at AMHS, said she chose the piece because it allowed for a bigger cast and an ensemble. The play is based on Kaufman and Hart's friend Alexander Woollcott's stay at Hart's estate. Woollcott demanded everything, including chocolate cake at his bedside, and then complained about his …

Be sure to grab a before or after dinner fabulous meal at Antoine McGuires Oyster and Ale House in Haverstraw. Just down the street from Union. Chef Anthony is classically French trained and certainly knows his way around a kitchen. Defiant beers and very reasonable prices. You will feel like you are in the Village. Great atmosphere.   more ›
