Rockland Highway Department Road Resurfacing Program Under Way

More than 40 county roads will be resurfaced and paved through July with lane striping in July and August

 

Be prepared for some slow going over the next few months as Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef announced Thursday that the Rockland County Highway Department has started its largest ever paving and resurfacing program. The 40 roads throughout the county encompass an area of approximately 20 miles of pavement or more than 428,064 square yards at a projected cost of $4.8 million.  Part of the road program scheduled for 2012 was delayed due to Hurricane Sandy and then the harsh winter took an additionally took a toll on the roads. 

“The county’s Superintendent of Highways Skip Vezzetti and his dedicated staff will be hard at work during the next few months utilizing various processes including hot-in-place recycling, milling, conventional paving, chipsealing and microsealing to improve our roads throughout the county,” said Vanderhoef.

In order to meet an ambitious schedule, the milling and paving operations on the roads will be done concurrently. The hot-in-place operation will also occur simultaneously with the microsealing and chipsealing processes.  Line striping is planned for July and August.

Some of the work is already evident as drivers on Middletown Road and Little Tor Road can attest.

  • Middletown Road from Route 59 to Smith Road
  • Little Tor Road from West Clarkstown Road to Milich Lane
  • Eckerson Road from Route 45 to West Clarkstown Road
  • New City from Congers Road from Route 304 to Brewery Lane
  • Townline Road from Ehrhardt Road to Sickletown Road
  • Sanatorium Road from Route 45 to Summit Park Road
  • Sterling Mine Road from Arcadia to Route 17
  • Pomona Road from Route 306 to Route 45
  • Airmont Road from Dunnigan Drive to Montebello Road
  • Strawtown Road from Demarest Ave to Germonds Road
  • West Clarkstown Road from New Clarkstown Road to Red Hill Road
  • New Hempstead Road from Route 45 to Summit Park Road

The top two inches of all the roads will be milled then they will be resurfaced with work scheduled for completion by the end of May. Work on Airmont Road between Dunnigan Drive and Montebello Road will take place at night once a date is coordinated with the NYS Thruway.

Microseal is scheduled for 12 roadways:

  • Old Nyack Turnpike from Pascack Road to the end
  • Hammond Road from Suffern Lane to Willow Grove Road
  • Washington Street from Main Street to Dederer Street
  • S. Monsey Road from Saddle River Road to Christmas Hill Road
  • College Road from Route 59 to Highview Ave
  • Cherry Lane from Christmas Hill Road to Route 59
  • Airmont Road from the NJ border to Route 59
  • Washburns Lane from Central Highway to Route 9W
  • Tomkins Ave from Route 9W to Beach Road
  • Strawtown Road from Germonds Road to 235 Strawtown Road
  • Central Highway from South Mountain Road to Haverstraw Town border
  • Sickletown Road from Townline Road to West Nyack Road

All microseal roads will receive a hot- in-place treatment as part of the microsealing process, which has already begun on Strawtown and Sickletown roads. The hot-in-place treatment will be finished at the end of May with all microseal roads scheduled for completion by the second week of July.

A third set of roadways will receive chipseal treatment.

  • Old Mountain Road from South Blvd to Route 9W
  • Viola Road from Galbraith Road to Forshay Road

  • River Road
  • Greenbush Road from Clausland Mountain to Route 303
  • Greenbush Rd from Bradley Parkway to Route 303
  • Viola Road from Spook Rock Road to Galbraith Road
  • Spook Rock Road from Grandview Ave to Spook Rock Road
  • Spook Rock Road from Highview Road to Grandview Road
  • Spook Rock Road from Lime Kiln Road to Grandview Road
  • Johnsontown Road
  • Reservoir Road from Route 210 to West Main Street
  • West Main St from Wayne Ave to Route 9W

Chipsealing of roads will begin during the last week of May with completion by mid June.
